Abstract: A device and method for enterally hydrating a patient with cooled fluids. The patient may be a paralyzed or limited upper body mobility patient with a functional gastrointestinal system who is nonetheless incapable or not fully capable of drinking unassisted. Here fluids are provided by a suspended container which also has a pouch to admit cooling material such as ice, but to keep the cooling material separate from the fluid. The container may also have optional graduation markings to allow for convenient estimation of fluid use, and an upper open and closeable cap to allow the container to be refilled. The container has a lower fluid conducting tube that terminates in a mouthpiece. The mouthpiece contains a fluid valve formed from at least one slit in an elastic material. Patient mouth force on the valve causes the slit to enlarge, thus enabling cooled fluid to flow into the patient.

  • Patent number: 9611081
Abstract: A closure 40 for a container body includes a liner 46 which incorporates a hydrogen generating device comprising a hydride which generates hydrogen on contact with moisture. The liner may be an interference fit within the body 42. The liner 46 and other liners described may include control means for controlling passage of moisture to the hydrogen generating means and/or sealing means for sealing the closure to a container. In use, with the closure secured to a container, water vapor passes into liner 46 and contacts the hydride which generates hydrogen. A reaction between hydrogen and oxygen which has passed into the container takes place, catalysed by a catalyst, and water is produced. Thus, oxygen is scavenged.

Abstract: Grapes while attached to the stems where they formed are cooled with the removal of excess moisture and are enclosed within an enclosure containing a gaseous atmosphere (e.g., air) bounded by a semi-permeable film having an oxygen transmission rate of approximately 100 to 400 cm3-mil/m2/24 hr., and preferably approximately 260 to 325 cm3-mil/m2/24 hr. The enclosure is sealed and the concentration of carbon dioxide present therein is adjusted to an initial concentration of approximately 3 to 19 percent by volume (preferably 13 to 18 percent by volume). The initial concentration of carbon dioxide within the specified semi-permeable enclosure has been found to well prolong the storage life of the grapes stored therein at a temperature of approximately 31 to 35° F. with the advantageous promotion of continued grape respiration at a low level during storage. The grape quality for the intended end use (e.g., human consumption as a table grape) is effectively extended.

Abstract: An absorbent pad that contains activated carbon to reduce confinement odor in a vacuum-packaged food product is provided. An embodiment of absorbent pad contains activated carbon and an antimicrobial agent that further reduces confinement odor by two mechanisms of action: reducing bacterial counts in the liquid purge that cause breakdown of carbohydrates and proteins in food products; and trapping of confinement odor-causing breakdown products by the activated carbon. The absorbent body in the absorbent pad actively draws in liquid purge and dissolved volatile breakdown products in the vacuum package that produce confinement odor, which produces greater and more rapid contact of odor-causing compounds with the activated carbon.

The containers preferably include a gas-permeable membrane comprising (1) a microporous film, and (2) a polymeric coating on the microporous film. Using appropriate containers and appropriate controlled atmospheres around the container, the respiring materials can be stored and/or ripened under controlled conditions. Bananas can be ripened while they are being transported, or in conventional ripening rooms without opening the containers in which they have been transported. The ripe bananas are less dehydrated and remain in a satisfactory ripened state for longer periods of time.
