The patch bag is especially useful in the packaging of a bone-in meat product, especially ham, sparerib, picnic, back rib, short loin, short rib, whole turkey, pork loin.

The nylon blend layers, which can be two or more in the film, add toughness and stiffness, but also elastic recovery to the final film. The intervening layer or layers of a material with relatively low modulus and crystallinity aid in orientation of the film during manufacture, permitting the use of more of the crystalline nylon than would be practical if only a single nylon layer was used.

    Abstract: The invention provides a film, a package and methods for employing the same. The film has a first layer of an elastomer and a second layer of a polyethylene such as a single site catalyst polyethylene. The film can have a third layer of a polyethylene such that the second layer is disposed between the first and third layers. The polyethylene of the third layer also can be single site catalyst polyethylene and, the elastomer of the first layer can be styrene butadiene copolymer. The film has an oxygen transmission rate of up to about 1000, such as 150-450 cc/100 in.sup.2 /24 hr., typically 260-400 cc/100 in.sup.2 /24 hr., with values of 300, 350-360, 400 cc/100 in.sup.2 /24 hr. and even higher exhibited by the film. The film is suitable for packages, for instance, packaging for cole slaw and leafy salad. The film also exhibits excellent clarity, durability, seal strength and machinability.

The substituents on the cyclodextrin molecule causes the cyclodextrin to be dispersible and stable in the film material resulting in an extrudable thermoplastic. Such materials can be used as a single layer film material, a multilayer film material which can be coated or uncoated and can be used in structural materials wherein the thermoplastic is of substantial thickness resulting in structural stiffness.

    Abstract: A generally flat tray is adapted for supporting a pizza or other food item on an upper surface thereof. The tray is preferably comprised of corrugated paperboard with its upper surface having a parchment-like coating and including a plurality of linear, elongated slots arranged in a spaced manner to permit juices and liquids exuded by the pizza to flow into and be trapped within the inner corrugated portion of the tray for maintaining the pizza crust dry and crisp. Facing edges of each slot are beveled downwardly to facilitate flow of the juices and liquids into the tray's inner portion where the juices and liquids are entrapped. The parchment-like coating on the tray's upper surface draws the juices and liquids from the pizza crust and redirects heat emanating from the pizza upward back into the pizza to maintain the pizza at an elevated temperature. The tray may be used for storing and serving pizza and may be integrated in the bottom of a closed container for transport and extended storage of the pizza.

Alternatives to flame treatment include corona treatment, solvent treatment or treatment of the polymethylpentene surface with a solvent based primer.

The impermeable film preferably includes an EVOH layer sandwiched between ionomer layers for improved barrier properties.

    Abstract: An article for shrink packaging bone-in food masses such as meat cuts comprising a thin-walled heat shrinkable thermoplastic film bag and a thick-walled nonheat shrinkable thermoplastic film patch having its inner surface bonded to the bag outer surface. Both surfaces have high energy as the sole bonding means and the patch-bag bond strength increases during heat shrinking around the meat mass such that the bag portion adhered to the patch shrinks less than the rest of the bag.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic, multi-layer packaging film is disclosed which comprises at least 5 layers in which one surface layer is a heat sealing layer and one of the internal layers is a barrier layer. The heat sealing surface layer comprises a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefin having 4 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule and said copolymer comprises 90% to 75% ethylene and 10% to 25% alpha-olefin having 4 to 8 carbon molecules and a density of less than 915 kg/m.sup.2. The heat sealing layer may also comprise a blend of the aformentioned copolymer with an ethylene/vinyl-acetate copolymer or an ethylene/butyl-acrylate copolymer. The film can be oriented to be heat shrinkable and can be formed into bags by heat sealing portions of the sealing surfaces together. The heat seals have superior cold strength and minimize seal failure when the bags are loaded with relatively heavy products.
