Abstract: An economical method of manufacturing a plastic glazing assembly having a decorative marking and/or opaque border printed from a thermally curable ink is presented. This method includes the steps of forming a substantially transparent plastic panel; printing an opaque pattern from an ink, the printed pattern being in contact with the plastic panel; pre-drying the ink of the printed pattern to a tack-free condition; applying a weather resistant layer on the printed pattern and on the plastic panel; curing the ink of the printed pattern and the weather resistant layer; and depositing an abrasion resistant layer on the weather resistant layer. In this process the drying of the ink substantially removes the solvent from the ink without substantially curing the ink.

  • Publication number: 20080206493
Abstract: An aspect of the present invention defines the composition and the physical properties of a coating solution so that drying unevenness is not caused even when the coated film is dried rapidly based on the premise that the coating solution containing a liquid crystal compound is coated on a flexible strip substrate being transferred in an amount of 4.5 to 12 mL/m2. In the invention, a fluoroaliphatic-group-containing polymer including prescribed repeating units and also satisfying the prescribed condition is added to a coating solution for forming an optically anisotropic layer. As a result, the fluoroaliphatic-group-containing polymer travels rapidly to the interface between the coating solution and air in initial drying after coating, stabilizing the air interface of the coated film. Use of the invention therefore prevents drying unevenness even when the coating amount is increased and the solution is rapidly dried under conditions that tend to cause drying unevenness.

Abstract: A thin film of zinc oxide is deposited by sputter deposition in a partial pressure of oxygen on a suitable at a low temperature, such as less than 300 degrees Centigrade, to provide an amorphous film. This should take place in a sputtering environment which will produce an oxygen deficient film layer. After this, the film is crystallized by heat treatment in an oxygen free environment in a given temperature range. The thin film produced by this process will have very low electrical resistance, is transparent from about the visible to beyond 10 microns in wavelength, is highly resistant to laser energy and is highly conductive.

Abstract: Substrates, such as spectacle lenses for example, may be provided with a coating which is not uniform by way of screens. The screens are aperture rings, arranged concentric to a symmetry axis of the vaporising crucible in a vacuum coating unit, by way of a screen holder. The spectacle lenses are disposed on a substrate holder also in circles about the symmetry axis. The shadows cast by the aperture rings cover but a partial region of the spectacles lenses such that those regions of the lenses receive less coating than in the unshaded free regions. The aperture rings are exchangeable in order to match the coating process to the customer requirements. Furthermore, the separation of the subtrate holder from the aperture rings is adjustable.

Abstract: A method is provided for coating optical lenses and other optical articles with anti-reflection (AR) coatings. The lenses have low reflectivity, provide a substantially white light reflection and have a low stress AR coating and are ideally suited for optical lenses made using a molding procedure which provides a low stress lens substrate. In one aspect the method uses special coating compositions with one being a high index of refraction composition and the other being a low index of refraction composition. In another aspect a method is also disclosed using an optical monitor in conjunction with a conventional vapor deposition apparatus whereby an optical reference lens is used and a particular light frequency of reflected light is measured and this measurement is then used to determine when the desired optical coating is achieved. In a still further aspect the method also preferably calculates the optical thickness of each layer using a specific ratio of blue to green to red colors in the reflected light.
