    Abstract: A protective coating method of a material such as aromatic polyurethane substrates is effected through a process that promotes coating adhesion to the substrate while providing a wood-like aesthetic. Closed cells on the surface of the aromatic polyurethane are opened via sanding techniques to promote adhesion. Once a sufficient surface is achieved, the substrate is coated using spray techniques to protect the aromatic polyurethane from ultra-violet light exposure. The wood-like appearance is achieved through embossing a wood-grain on the deformable surface and subsequently filling the grain with a contrasting agent to highlight its appearance through a reverse-roll-coating technique. Abrasion properties are achieved through a final clear top coat that allows both the contrast agent and the top coat to fully cure.

During assembly of the glazing, a solution comprising the same polymer material as the interlayer is applied to the conductors and allowed to dry prior to fitting a glazing sheet on top. This gives rise to a thin coating of polymer around the conductors and subsequent heat treatment causes the this coating and the main polymer interlayer to soften and fuse. The resulting structure shows improved encapsulation of the conductors (wires and busbars) with greater resistance to water ingress at the edge of the glazing.

A chemical fluid etchant is printed only on selected areas of a pattern on a fabric of cellulose fibers. Preferably, the fabric is a composite fabric that also has non-cellulose fibers. A curable fluid adhesive is printed only on other selected areas of the pattern. Ornamental particles are deposited onto the curable adhesive. The composite fabric is heated to cure the adhesive and fix the particles to the other selected areas, and to simultaneously activate the etchant to dissolve the cellulose fibers at the selected areas. The chemical etchant is removed by rinsing the composite fabric.
