  • Patent number: 4910066
Abstract: A reinforced paper and method for making the paper. The method involves applying to finished paper or the areas of finished paper to be reinforced a reinforcing medium dissolved in water with a surface tension reducing agent added. The solution rapidly impregnates the paper and the water and surface tension reducing agent are subsequently evaporated. The reinforcing medium rearranges the bonding of the fibers in the paper, thus strengthening the paper. The process may be carried out at the line speeds of paper converters and, when only certain areas of the paper are reinforced, the reinforced areas have a thickness substantially the same as the unreinforced areas. A preferred reinforcing medium is an anionic acrylic copolymer.

  • Patent number: 4869726
Abstract: For providing a vertical line marking on the side of a pile of cut out fabric members in order to provide a mark on the edge of all these members it is customary to brand a line mark into the side of the pile by means of a vertical branding wire or edge. For avoiding a number of associated drawbacks, a marking member is used which includes an axially slotted tube placed with a slot thereof engaging the pile side. The tube is connected with an injector for injecting into the tube a pulse of pressurized air holding a dyestuff powder, which is thus exhausted through the slot and into the pile side so as to intrude into the edge region of all the single fabric members and thereby provide a visible marking. The upper end of the tube receives a stopper piston having at its lower end a foot member projecting outwardly through the slot so as to be engageable with the top side of the pile and thus limit the operative length of the slot to the actual height of the pile.

  • Patent number: 4680237
Abstract: A method of placing color indicia or tints on a porous surface includes the steps of forming a base layer on a surface, such as a floor, by applying a liquid layer of an unpigmented metal interlock acrylic finish to the surface, and allowing the base layer to dry. A pigmented layer of liquid metal interlock acrylic finish containing an acrylic polymer emulsion and pigment substance is then applied over the base layer in the form of an indicia, such as a decoration, advertisement, or pattern. After the pigmented layer has dried, a protective layer of liquid metal interlock acrylic finish is then applied over the pigmented layer and allowed to dry to protect the design, and the protective layer can be buffed to a shine. The method can be used to quickly and easily apply directional aids, advertisements, tints, or other colored indicia to a floor. Both the pigmented and unpigmented layers are readily removable with common detergents such as ammonia.

  • Patent number: 4670301
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating the helical weld seam extending around a spirally welded pipe is disclosed. Following the application of the usual coating as by a sintered polyethylene coating process, the heated pipe is subjected to a further flow of the coating material from a hopper on a movable coating apparatus. The outlet chute of the hopper is aligned with the pipe and an operator drives a movable carriage carrying the hopper on a rail system extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe. The speed of movement of the carriage on the track is coordinated with the speed of rotation of the pipe on its longitudinal axis and with the pitch of the weld seam so that the outlet chute of the coating apparatus remains aligned with the weld seam of the pipe. The operator is provided with a lever which controls the material outlet so that a proper flow of coating material can be maintained.

  • Patent number: 4666732
Abstract: A process for the regulation or control of the flow of a viscous liquid, such as an adhesive or plastic substance, which is applied as seam (1) on a workpiece (2) by an applicator device (3) guided by a robot, whereby the viscous liquid of the applicator device is continuously supplied from a cylinder (7) in which a piston (9), shiftable by a drive mechanism (1) exerts a constant pressure on the liquid. According to the process, the path (x.sub.i) is measured which is passed by the piston (9) during the time in which the robot passes through a certain track section (n). The measured value (x.sub.i) for the piston path is compared to a set value (x.sub.s) for the piston path and the difference (x.sub.s -x.sub.i) is added during the subsequent passing of the same track section during the next work cycle, as a correction set value (K) algebraically to a basic set value (f.sub.sg) for a regulation or control of the nozzle opening of the applicator device (3).

Abstract: An advancing optical fiber (22) is marked with a plurality of spaced indicia along its longitudinal axis. The indicia are applied by an applicator wheel (56) in the form of a disc which is mounted for rotation about an axis which is transverse to the path of travel of the optical fiber. The wheel has a plurality of marking teeth (70-70) arranged about its periphery with each tooth provided with a groove (72) for receiving increments of length of the optical fiber as it is moved rotatably. As the wheel is turned, each tooth in seriatim compresses a porous, resilient pad (80) which is disposed to one side of the wheel in a chamber through which the optical fiber is advanced to cause ink from the pad to be received in the groove of each tooth. Further rotation of the wheel causes ink to be transferred from each groove to the moving fiber. The pad is supplied with ink through a tube by a peristaltic pump (90).

  • Patent number: 4600597
Abstract: A method for determining the contour of a spin-coated thin film of material, such as a photoresist solution, on an uneven topography, such as a patterned semiconductor wafer, utilizes a pattern of features as isolated, raised lines of different widths. The pattern serves to provide frequency weighted parameters used to estimate the coating conformality on both simple and complex topographies. One parameter indicating the contour is independent of coating thickness and the other parameter suggests the range of feature-to-feature interaction inherent in complex topographies. The pattern is useful as a "knock-out" portion of a product wafer to monitor the contour of the coating deposited by spun-coated process steps.Orienting the line pattern in radial and tangential position reveals coating thickness relationships dependent on feature orientation with respect to the centrifugal center of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 4600599
Abstract: There is disclosed a method of and apparatus for producing a wear-resistant coating on a thin metallic strip, for example for the manufacture of coating scrapers for paper webs. After preparatory surface treatment the strip is passed longitudinally through a coating zone in which coating material in a molten state is sprayed onto the strip by a coating unit as the strip passes. The wear-resistant coating is built up in steps by the application of several coating layers one on top of the other, each being applied during a respective pass of the strip through the coating zone. The strip speed and the capacity of the coating unit are adjusted in relation to each other so that the heat supplied to the carrier material by each coating layer applied will be so slight in relation to the thermal capacity of the carrier material that the temperature increase in the carrier material does not cause any change in the physical properties of the carrier material.
