  • Patent number: 8501272
Abstract: Optically anisotropic spheres that can be used as pixel elements in rotating element displays are fabricated by partially (e.g., hemispherically) coating a plurality of spheres by transfer coating methods. Typically, a monolayer of spaced apart monochromal (e.g., white) spheres is formed on a support surface by, for example, making use of a removable template matrix. Next, a uniform layer of viscous coating material (e.g., black coating) is applied to the monolayer of spheres to transfer at least some of the coating material onto the surface of spheres in a monolayer. The obtained partially coated spheres are optionally cured by a UV or thermal exposure and are then removed from the support substrate. In some embodiments, coating material also provides electrical anisotropy to the spheres. Transfer coating methods result in improved precision of hemispherical coating and allow use of environmentally robust pixel elements.

Abstract: An infrared sensitive, positive-working, image forming composition and element are disclosed. The image forming composition comprises a 1,1-di[(alkylphenoxy)ethoxy]cyclohexane, an infrared absorbing dye having a maximum absorption peak in the range of from about 700 nm to about 1100 nm, and a novolac polymer. The composition is applied and dried on a planar, hydrophilic substrate to form an image forming element, in particular, a planographic printing plate. Upon imagewise exposure to a near-infrared radiation source, the infrared dye absorbs light in the exposed areas and converts it to heat, which causes a disruption in the matrix of the image forming composition. Upon development with an aqueous alkaline developer, the exposed areas are removed while the nonexposed areas remain, thus forming a positive image.

  • Patent number: 8241700
Abstract: An object is to provide a deposition method in which an organic material layer which is a material of a common layer is evenly formed over an entire surface of a donor substrate (a first substrate) and can be transferred to an element formation substrate (a second substrate) as transfer layers which are common layers for red (R), green (G), and blue (B) with different thicknesses. An organic material layer over a first absorption layer and a second absorption layer is deposited to a second substrate as a first transfer layer and a second transfer layer by sublimating the organic material layer over the first substrate. The thicknesses of the first and second transfer layers differ in accordance with the ratio of the area of the first absorption layer to the area of the second absorption layer.

Abstract: An ink composition for a color filter includes about 100 parts by weight of a pigment dispersion, about 7 parts by weight to about 65 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin having hydroxyl group at a side chain of the thermosetting resin, about 0.015 part by weight to about 1.5 parts by weight of a thermal initiator, about 0.8 part by weight to about 15 parts by weight of an epoxy-based resin containing fluorine, and about 15 parts by weight to about 165 parts by weight of a solvent. A color filter substrate is manufactured using the ink composition for color filter. The ink composition for the color filter improves straightness of ink jetting through an ink-jetting nozzle and prevents the ink composition from spreading to neighboring pixels.

  • Patent number: 8187673
Abstract: The invention provides a lithographic method referred to as “dip pen” nanolithography (DPN). DPN utilizes a scanning probe microscope (SPM) tip (e.g., an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip) as a “pen,” a solid-state substrate (e.g., gold) as “paper,” and molecules with a chemical affinity for the solid-state substrate as “ink.” Capillary transport of molecules from the SPM tip to the solid substrate is used in DPN to directly write patterns consisting of a relatively small collection of molecules in submicrometer dimensions, making DPN useful in the fabrication of a variety of microscale and nanoscale devices. The invention also provides substrates patterned by DPN, including submicrometer combinatorial arrays, and kits, devices and software for performing DPN. The invention further provides a method of performing AFM imaging in air.
