Abstract: A 3D object according to the invention involves substrate layers infiltrated by a hardened material. The 3D object may be fabricated by a method comprising the following steps: Flatten a substrate layer. Position powder on all or part of a substrate layer. Repeat this step for the remaining substrate layers. Stack the substrate layers. Transform the powder into a substance that flows and subsequently hardens into the hardened material. The hardened material solidifies in a spatial pattern that infiltrates positive regions in the substrate layers and does not infiltrate negative regions in the substrate layers. In a preferred embodiment, the substrate is carbon fiber and excess substrate is removed by abrasion. Flattening a substrate layer involves reducing planar inconsistencies or imperfections, and comprises applying heat to each substrate layer, cooling the substrate layers, and optionally applying tension and/or pressure to the heated and cooled substrate layers.

In use, the shape memory polymer serves to bring surfaces of a structural defect into approximation, whereafter use of the means for molecular scale healing allowed for movement of the healing means into the defect and thus obtain molecular scale healing. The means for molecular scale healing can be a thermoplastic such as fibers, particles or spheres which are used by heating to a level at or above the thermoplastic's melting point, then cooling of the composition below the melting temperature of the thermoplastic. Abstract: A method of forming an elastic labeling band. The method includes covering a central portion of a web of tag material with a release agent, advancing the web of tag material longitudinally and disposing a layer of molten elastomer over the advancing web of tag material, including over the release agent on the central portion thereof. The layer of molten elastomer is disposed over the web of tag material so that the elastomer bonds only to those portions of the web not covered with the release agent. The method includes curing the elastomer to define, with the web bonded thereto, an advancing web assembly, and separating a longitudinal segment from the web assembly to define an elastic labeling band.

Abstract: A stand-off is necessary to separate two glass lites (panes of glass) in a vacuum insulated glazing system. This stand-off must provide sufficient mechanical support to keep the lites apart despite one atmosphere pressure pushing the lites together. For systems that are designed with flexible edge seals, there will be movement of one lite relative to the other during diurnal cycling, and the stand-offs will therefore be scraped against at least one of the lite surfaces. Because many mechanically robust materials suitable for stand-offs have high friction, it is beneficial to apply a lubricant to the surface of the stand-off. However, it is also beneficial to adhere the stand-off to one lite during the manufacturing operation, and this need opposes the need for good lubricity. This invention describes means for optimizing the composition of a stand-off to meet these conflicting needs.
