Patent number: 4971125Abstract: A shake fabricating process for producing roofing shakes from wood is provided. In accordance with the process a log is stripped of its bark and cut into bolts having a preselected length corresponding to the desired length of the shakes to be produced. The bolts are then cut in half, or in quarters, longitudinally to produce bolt sections which are, in turn, cut into boards having a preselected thickness. A plurality of longitudinally oriented grooves are then cut into the upper and lower surfaces of the boards to give the surfaces the appearance of being hand split, and the boards are cut diagonally from end to end to produce a pair of shakes which decrease in thickness from their first end portions to their second end portions. In order to achieve the desired wood colorization the shakes are then placed in a pressure treating chamber and a first vacuum is generated in the chamber for a preselected time period in order to draw a liquid pigment into the chambers.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1989Date of Patent: November 20, 1990Inventor: Kenneth P. Patent number: 4413024Abstract: Disclosed is a method for the chemical treatment of woods, which comprises introducing a chemical solution into a pressure vessel charged with wood so that the wood is entirely dipped in the chemical solution, heating the chemical solution to a temperature within the range not causing high temperature troubles in the wood, and elevating the pressure in the pressure vessel above the saturated steam pressure to cause the chemical solution to permeate into the wood.According to this method, the chemical permeation treatment can be accomplished in a very short time at a low temperature not causing high temperature troubles in woods. Furthermore, the preliminary boiling treatment, which is indispensable in the conventional method, can be omitted.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1980Date of Patent: November 1, 1983Assignee: Fuji Kogyo Company, LimitedInventors: Hideo Miyata, Hitoshi Ishii

Patent number: 4364975Abstract: A tank having a hinged top and sealing means is provided with a series of heaters mounted on the inside of the front, rear and side walls and also the bottom of the tank. A rack containing fiberboards placed in upright, spaced position is set on the bottom heaters and a solution of solvent and asphalt or the like is pumped into the tank, then removed. The top of the tank is sealed and a heating medium is pumped through the heaters, while a vacuum pump is started to produce a vacuum inside the tank and suction exerted for evaporating solvent. One or two condensers, between the tank and the vacuum pump, condense the solvent vapors for collection and reuse. With one condenser, an excess condensate tank is connected to the lower condensate section of the condenser. A valved pipe connecting with the pipe between a lower condensate section of the condenser and the vacuum pump is utilized to bleed air into the tank after treatment and may be used to control the initial vacuum applied.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1981Date of Patent: December 21, 1982Assignee: W. Patent number: 4325993Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preserving wood, in particular hardwoods, against attack by living organisms, e.g. fungi and insects, which destroy wood. In particular, the present invention provides a one or two step process for preserving wood against fungal and/or insect attack. The fungicide treatment step comprises introducing a copper solution or a copper solution into wood. The insecticide treatment step comprises introducing a chromium and arsenic solution into wood. If the pH of the wood system is controlled, both steps may be carried out simultaneously so as to preserve the wood against fungal and insect attack. Alternatively, the insecticide treatment step may follow the fungicide treatment. Where only protection against fungus is desired, the process comprises introducing copper and arsenic solution into wood. On the other hand, if only an insecticide treatment is required, the process comprises only the abovementioned insecticide treatment step.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1979Date of Patent: April 20, 1982Inventor: John G. Patent number: 4303705Abstract: A process for the treatment of wood is disclosed in which water-borne wood treatment materials, such as CCA salts, are forced into the wood under pressure and the water-borne wood treatment materials are held within the wood under pressure until they are deposited as by precipitation or chemical affixation. The precipitation or chemical affixation step is conducted at elevated temperatures. The elevated temperatures may be established by heating the wood treatment materials while they are in contact with the wood, by draining the wood treatment materials from external contact with the wood, while maintaining a sufficient pressure to prevent kickback and heating the wood as by steaming or by submerging the wood in a heated aqueous bath. If a heated aqueous bath is used it may advantageously contain additional wood treatment materials such as wood-softening agents, antichecking agents, filmformers, coloring agents, dimensional stabilizers, flame-retardants, antistatic agents and the like.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1977Date of Patent: December 1, 1981Inventor: William C.
