Patent number: 6309703Abstract: This invention is a rapid low-cost technique for manufacturing thick high-performance carbon and ceramic composites in the form of uniformly densified near-net shaped structures. This is accomplished by impregnating composite preforms with low-viscosity wetting monomers which undergo polymerization followed by pyrolysis reactions in the preform ultimately creating ceramic and/or carbon matrices. Since the monomers possess low-molecular-weight they have low viscosities. Thus, if they wet the fiber and partially-densified preform they can easily impregnate even the smallest pores. Once inside the preforms, polymerization of the monomers is then initiated, resulting in a liquid matrix-precursor of the high molecular weight needed to produce a superior matrix (upon pyrolysis) with high efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1998Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Phillip G. The compressible characteristics are provided by disposing an intermediate layer having substantially uniformly distributed voids of substantially uniform size between the base ply and the working surface of the printing blanket. The voids of the compressible intermediate layer are formed by introducing high melting point microspheres formed from thermoplastic resins into an elastomeric matrix, coating said microsphere containing elastomeric matrix upon an upper surface of the base ply and then vulcanizing the coated base ply at a temperature of between about 80-150° C. for between about one and six hours to form the compressible layer having substantially uniform compression characteristics. Once all of the layers of the blanket are stacked, a final vulcanization treatment at between about 132-160° C.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1999Date of Patent: September 11, 2001Assignee: Reeves Brothers, Inc.Inventors: Francesco Castelli, Gianpiero Invernizzi

Publication number: 20010001753Abstract: A reversible fabric particularly for use in the production of military rainflies is described. The fabric has first and second faces, each of which has a visually distinct color in order that rainflies and other articles made from the fabric can be used to provide inconspicuous shelter in two visually distinct environments. Each of the sides of the fabric provides requisite degrees of visual opacity and infrared reflectance, as well as other functional properties—such as water-resistance, etc. The fabric includes a dyed textile substrate and three coats of pigmented polyurethane having varying compositions; the composite fabric can be produced by a coating and/or laminating process.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2001Publication date: May 24, 2001Inventors: Steve Nelson, Benito Boiardi
