  • Patent number: 7449217
Abstract: Silica-based, chemically-bonded porous coatings, synthesized via the reaction of organo silanes with silica, are used as coatings for inkjet image printing. Silica is used as the base material in all cases, due to its favorable chemical properties of the surface, and the favorable pore structure. The silane-silica reaction product substantially retains the original pore structure of the pre-reacted silica. The disclosed embodiments solve the problems in the prior art in that any catalytic activity of the silica surface towards image fade is eliminated by the chemical modification of silica. This improves the image fade and humid fastness properties of the coating.

  • Patent number: 6893686
Abstract: A non-fluorocarbon oil and grease barrier packaging for storing materials, particularly products that need oil and grease resistant characteristics. The barrier packaging does not contain fluorocarbons, which improves the environmental rating of the oil and grease barrier packaging. The packaging is made by applying an acrylate based overprint varnish to a substrate and then curing the overprint varnish with a curable energy source, which regulates a cross-link density of the overprint varnish. Application can be flexography, rotogravure, or either rod or blade coated. The overprint varnish possesses oil and grease resistant characteristics, which allows packaging producers to forego use of oil and grease resistant coated substrates in their packaging manufacturing processes.

  • Patent number: 6835412
Abstract: A metallized substrate, such as used to make a resonant circuit tag with inductive and capacitive elements in series, has a thin inorganic or polymeric dielectric layer formed on a metal layer. The inorganic layer may be formed by anodizing a surface of the metal layer. The organic layer may be formed by flexographic printing. In both cases, a via hole is formed through the dielectric layer. A second layer of very thin conductive metal is deposited on the dielectric layer and in the via hole. The substrate is subsequently patterned with an etch resist and then etched to form the inductor coil and the capacitor plates, which are interconnected via the metallized via hole.

  • Patent number: 6835421
Abstract: A method for impregnating decorative papers which are used for producing highly abrasion-proof laminate floor materials. The decorative paper is first moistened with an amino resin and is thus impregnated. The amount of resin applied is controlled using dosing rollers. In addition, a layer including an amino resin is sprayed with a special dispersion onto the moistened decorative paper. The final mass per unit area with regard to the dry mass of the base paper ranges from 100% to 250%.

  • Patent number: 6808739
Abstract: Method of selectively removing volatile components from a composition, comprising coating the composition onto a first substrate surface of a substrate, wherein the composition comprises a nonresident volatile component and a resident volatile component. The method further includes positioning at least a portion of the coated substrate between a condensing surface having a condensing surface temperature and a heating surface having a heating surface temperature that is greater than the condensing surface temperature, wherein the condensing surface is in a spaced apart, confronting relationship to the coated surface of the substrate and wherein the heated surface is in thermal contact with a second substrate surface opposite the first substrate surface. In the method, the heated surface temperature and the condensing surface temperature are such that the positioning step causes the nonresident volatile component to be selectively removed from the portion of the coated substrate.
