Abstract: A process for treating wood comprising applying to the surface of the wood a boron based preservative which reacts with moisture within the wood to form a boron compound and alcohol and subjecting the wood with the applied preservative to a substantially moisture-free and enclosed environment for a period sufficient for the applied preservative to be absorbed into the wood and to produce the boron compound on reaction with the moisture in the wood and for the alcohol by-product of the reaction to be adsorbed within the wood structure.
Abstract: Polypyrrole (PPy) is one of the most commonly studied conducting polymers due to its good stability, high conductivity, ease of preparation and non-toxicity. The stability of the conductivity of polypyrrole films depends on the choice of dopant anion, the method of preparation, and the conditions of aging. Most of the existing methods only improve stability by sacrificing conductivity, as well as sensitivity. This invention provides a method for coating conducting polymer onto a substrate by first applying an anionic dopant and an oxidizing agent onto the substrate. The monomer is then allowed to form the conducting polymer at about ?10 to ?80° C. for a sufficient period of time. After storage for a long period of time (nearly a year), the conductive polymer coating still retains almost the same strain sensitivity and at least up to 85% of its initial conductivity.

Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor that includes several oxo-anion compositions useful for preventing the propagation of pit corrosion on aluminum and aluminum alloys. The oxo-anion compositions may include soluble polymeric oxidic acids comprising combinations of molybdenum, phosphorous, tungsten, and silicon. These compositions are useful as corrosion inhibitors in high-moisture, corrosive environments, such as radiators and cooling systems. For low-moisture environments, these oxo-anion compositions can be reacted with a counter-ion, such as various metals, including, but not limited to the rear earth metals, to form a soluble salt. The salt can then be adsorbed onto a carrier, such as paint pigments, which can then be applied to the surfaces of aluminum and aluminum alloys. These surface adsorbates then become sparingly soluble and are gradually released over time in the presence of an aqueous corrosive agent so as to prevent propagation of pit corrosion.

Abstract: The uniformity of a wet coating on a substrate is improved by contacting the coating at a first position with the wetted surfaces of periodic pick-and-place devices, and re-contacting the coating with such wetted surfaces at positions on the substrate that are different from the first position and not periodically related to one another with respect to their distance from the first position. A coating is applied to a substrate by applying an uneven wet coating, contacting the coating at a first position with the wetted surfaces of periodic pick-and-place devices, and re-contacting the coating with such wetted surfaces at positions on the substrate that are different from the first position and not periodically related to one another with respect to their distance from the first position. These methods can provide extremely uniform coatings and extremely thin coatings, at very high rates of speed. The coatings can be applied in lanes with sharply defined edges and independently adjustable coating calipers.
