  • Patent number: 8808829
Abstract: A panel assembly including a compression-molded, composite panel is provided. The panel has first and second outer layers and a core positioned between the outer layers. The core has a large number of cavities. The outer layers are bonded to the core by press molding. The assembly also includes a component pivotally connected to the panel and a living hinge which allows the component to pivot about a pivot axis between different use positions relative to the panel. The assembly further includes a stiffening support having a support axis substantially parallel to the pivot axis. The support is bonded or joined to the panel to locally reinforce the panel adjacent the living hinge. The stiffening support eliminates the need for a metal hinge and provides for a light weight assembly with improved aesthetics and function.

  • Patent number: 8808836
Abstract: A honeycomb structure has hexagonal cells surrounded by partition walls and a cylindrical outer peripheral wall covering the honeycomb structure. The partition walls have sides and intersection points. Six sides form a hexagonal cell. Three sides as the partition walls are joined to each other at a corresponding intersection point. The sides are divided into sides of basic partition walls and strength reinforcement sides as strength reinforcement partition walls. The strength reinforcement partition wall is thicker than the basic partition wall. Three strength reinforcement sides are joined at a corresponding strength reinforcement intersection point. Each strength reinforcement side in one group joined at one strength reinforcement intersection point is not connected continuously to each strength reinforcement side in another group joined at another strength reinforcement intersection point.

  • Patent number: 8808834
Abstract: A sandwich-type, structural, composite panel having a pattern of depressions formed at a lower outer surface thereof and stiffening supports received and retained therein is provided. The panel includes a first outer layer having a first outer surface, a second outer layer having a second outer surface and a core positioned between the outer layers and having a large number of cavities. The outer layers are bonded to the core by press molding. Crushed portions of the panel having a reduced thickness form the pattern of depressions at the second outer surface of the second outer layer. The stiffening supports are bonded or joined to the second outer layer within the pattern of depressions. The stiffening supports are sized, shaped and arranged within the pattern of depressions to provide the panel with strength to resist deflection from a load at various positions and orientations at the first outer surface.

  • Patent number: 8808827
Abstract: A cargo management system including a vehicle load floor having a vehicle component receiving feature is provided. The load floor compartmentalizes a cargo area into an upper compartment and a covered lower compartment. The system includes a first generally planar member having a first depression of a first predetermined depth and a compression-molded, composite, second generally planar member having a second depression of a second predetermined depth. A portion of the second member is locally crushed by press molding to form the second depression. Opposed surfaces of the first and second depressions cooperate to restrain movement of a vehicle component positioned in a cavity defined by the first and second depressions between the first and second members and prevent sudden transfer of vehicle component weight during vehicle acceleration and deceleration.

Abstract: A sandwich-type, structural, composite component including at least one hingedly connected portion which pivots with reduced or eliminated hinge binding and a cargo management system and vehicle load floor utilizing the component are provided. Elongated first and second interior portions of the component are locally crushed by the press molding to form a living hinge having a pivot axis and an elongated depression, respectively. The component includes an elongated cut-out which extends completely through the component at the elongated depression to obtain a clearance between a first portion of the component hingedly connected to a second portion of the component by the living hinge. The living hinge and the clearance allow pivotal movement of the first portion between different use positions relative to the second portion with reduced or eliminated hinge binding during the pivotal movement about the pivot axis.

Abstract: Disclosed are a structure for construction, which includes a hollow structure having a plurality of cells provided therein with hollows, arranged in a set three-dimension pattern, and partitioned by cell walls, and a cover enclosing the outside of the hollow structure, and a method of manufacturing the same. In this way, because the plurality of hollow cells of the hollow structure are partitioned by the cell walls and provided therein with the hollows, the overall weight can be reduced, and the rigidity and strength can be maintained at an adequate level despite the reduced weight. Also, due to the cells installed in the three-dimensional pattern, the growth of cracks or damage caused by impacts can be confined to local areas. Furthermore, since the weight is reduced, distribution and transportation costs can be reduced.

Abstract: A catalyst supporting body has a porous honeycomb base body having a porosity within a range of 40 to 60 vol. %. The body has a plurality of cells partitioned by cell walls arranged in a lattice-like shape. A coated catalyst layer made of a porous body having a void fraction of void spaces within a range of 53 to 63 vol. % is particularly supported on surfaces of the cell walls and in pores formed in the cell walls by a filling rate of not less than 40 vol. %. In an immersing step of a manufacturing method, a combination of a kind of catalyst slurry and the porous honeycomb base body is selected so that a cumulative-frequency at an intersection point between a pore distribution map and a particle size distribution map becomes not less than 80%. The pore distribution map indicates a relationship between pore sizes of pores in the porous honeycomb base body and a cumulative-frequency of the pores.

  • Publication number: 20140215964
Abstract: A structured-core laminate panel can be made in an efficient, structurally sound manner without the use of adhesives (film or liquid forms) using materials with different melt or glass transition temperatures. In one implementation, a manufacturer positions one or more resin substrates about a structured core, which comprises a relatively high melt or glass transition temperature compared with that of the one or more resin substrates. The manufacturer heats the assembly to at least the glass transition temperature of the resin substrates, but not to the melt or glass transition temperature of the structured core. This allows the one or more resin substrates to melt and bond (mechanically, chemically, or both) to the structured core on one side (or inner surface), while maintaining a substantially planar or original conformation on an opposing side (or outer surface).

Abstract: Nanoporous three-dimensional networks of polyurethane particles, e.g., polyurethane aerogels, and methods of preparation are presented herein. Such nanoporous networks may include polyurethane particles made up of linked polyisocyanate and polyol monomers. In some cases, greater than about 95% of the linkages between the polyisocyanate monomers and the polyol monomers are urethane linkages. To prepare such networks, a mixture including polyisocyanate monomers (e.g., diisocyanates, triisocyanates), polyol monomers (diols, triols), and a solvent is provided. The polyisocyanate and polyol monomers may be aliphatic or aromatic. A polyurethane catalyst is added to the mixture causing formation of linkages between the polyisocyanate monomers and the polyol monomers. Phase separation of particles from the reaction medium can be controlled to enable formation of polyurethane networks with desirable nanomorphologies, specific surface area, and mechanical properties.
