  • Patent number: 5380579
Abstract: The core of a honeycomb panel consists of a set of corrugated strips each of which alternate abut the immediately adjacent strips. Interlocking protrusions are formed in the abutting portions of the strips. The protrusions provide automatic registration of the strips without jigging or fixturing. Preferably the protrusions are somewhat undercut to provide a detent or snapping action upon assembly to provide mechanical integrity prior to bonding. The snapping action also holds the abutting surface together for uniform bonding. Lateral registration of the strips can be provided by, for example, forming a lance and window or mating dimples in the abutting surfaces. Bonding of the abutting surfaces can be done by soldering, brazing, or gluing. This honeycomb core structure is suitable for the continuous fabrication of panels of arbitrary length, width, and thickness.

Abstract: An improvement to a vibration-damping structural component of the type hag viscoelastic material sandwiched between two outer structural layers of stiffness material is disclosed. An inner layer of stiffness material having two predominant surfaces is positioned between the two outer structural layers of stiffness material and is fixed along an edge of one of the two predominant surfaces to one of the two outer structural layers of stiffness material along a line thereon corresponding to a nodal line of vibration. The remainder of the two predominant surfaces is fixed to the viscoelastic material. During flexural vibrations, the inner layer displaces in-plane with respect to the inner surfaces of the outer layers, causing greater shearing in the viscoelastic material, and therefore causing greater vibration damping in the structural component.

The apparatus may be used as a vacuum frame apparatus wherein the enclosed chamber receives product for exposure to a vacuum environment. Heat may be applied to facilitate manufacturing. External force may be provided to the product through external mechanical structure or an external pressure greater than atmospheric pressure external of the enclosed chamber. In another embodiment, the apparatus may be used as a membrane press wherein the product is outside the enclosed chamber and the enclosed chamber is pressurized to a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure such that the flexible sheet, sometimes heated, is pressed against the product.

  • Patent number: 5308675
Abstract: A load bearing structural support for machinery which provides a mechanism or dissipating both mechanical and vibrational energy comprises a high damping flexible reinforcement of fiber preform infiltrated with a viscoelastic material which has a high elongation to failure property and provides a significant damping ability. In one embodiment, an I-Beam is formed by a pair of L-shapes and a T-shape. The two L-shapes are placed back to back, with the T-shape placed therebetween forming an I-beam. At least one flexible reinforcement is then positioned between the vertical segments of the T-shape and the two L-shapes to isolate the T-shape. The T-shape is actually "floating" between the L-shapes. In another embodiment, the flexible reinforcement is suspended between at least a pair of spaced anchors with a vertical support of the same flexible reinforcement attached to or integral with the suspended flexible reinforcement portion and its free end anchored to a stable base.

These cells are linked with polygonal connecting plates, which have cuts at the corners to form a section of a complete frame for the protrusions. The linkage is formed with aligned semicylindrical flanges extended from the edges of the connecting plate and semicydrical grooves aligned in a different direction serving as sockets for the semicylindrical flanges from a neighboring connecting plate, so that any two neighboring plate can be rotated with respect to each other. The connecting plate also serves as a protective layer for the inner cell in the unprotruded area. The protrusions dirert any frontal thrust sidewise to prevent penetration.
