    Abstract: A method of cutting chemically toughened glass which is chemically toughened in a chemical toughening process of creating compressive stress in the surface of glass by exchanging first alkali ions in the glass with second alkali ions. The method includes the steps of applying a paste on a portion of the chemically toughened glass that is to be cut, heating the paste, and cutting the chemically toughened glass along the portion on which the paste is applied. The paste contains alkali ions. The ion radius of the alkali ions in the paste is smaller than an ion radius of the second alkali ions which substitute the first ions in the chemical toughening process.

    Abstract: An edge-protected product and finishing method therefor. The product comprises a first we and a second web bonded intermittently to the peripheral regions of a major surface of the sheet material to be protected. The bonded webs provide the desired level of protection to the peripheral regions and the edge surfaces of the sheet material. The intermittent bonding allows for the clean and convenient separation of the sheet material and the webs that a continuously bonded web would not be able to provide. Where laser cutting is used to separate the protected product, the edge-protected product with intermittent bonding areas allows for the separation without laser irradiation to the web material, thus no generation of toxic fume or charring due to oxidation, melting and/or disintegration of the web material caused by laser heating. The invention is particularly useful for protecting thin glass sheets, especially those in the form of a spool.

The outer edge section of the carrier film is gripped and released first, after which the outer edge section of the light release separator is gripped and released, and finally the heavy release separator is released, thereby allowing each separator and the carrier film to be reliably and easily released in the prescribed order.
