    Abstract: A carbon-filament reinforced gear material of laminated structure has layers of carbon filaments. The gear material includes a plurality of circular fabrics each having warps and wefts composed of a plurality of carbon filaments. The circular fabrics are laminated one on another such that the carbon filaments of their warps and wefts are substantially equiangularly spaced from those of another fabric about a common axis. The fabrics thus laminated are bound into a unitary structure by means of a binding agent of a thermosetting resin. A method for preparing the carbon-filament reinforced gear material includes the step of loosening the woven fabrics, each of which has such warps and wefts as are composed of the carbon filaments bundled into strands by means of a binding agent, by brushing the plain weave fabrics while applying thereto a binding agent so that the filaments in each of the strands may be substantially equidistantly separated from one another to make thinner and finer fabrics.

    Abstract: A lightweight composite fabric characterized by high retention of fiber content during initial laundering and exceptionally high strength as measured close to the edge of the fabric with cover and fabric aesthetics equivalent to conventional fabrics having 50% higher basis weight are produced by hydraulically needling short staple fibers and a substrate of continuous filaments formed into an ordered cross-directional array. The individual continuous filaments of the array are well spread and separated so that they have a spaced-apart relationship allowing interentangling of the short staple fibers with the continuous filaments to form more than about two reversals in the staple fibers per cm of staple fiber length between the faces of the fabric. The staple fibers have a linear density of less than about 0.3 tex per filament, are from about 0.5 cm to about 1 cm in length and comprise about 20% to about 50% of the weight of the composite fabric.

    Abstract: A seam between a pair of porous layers of sheet material includes a bead of cured nitrile latex material disposed on one side of one of the layers and extending transversely through the pores of both layers. The same is produced in its preferred form by first tensioning the juxtaposed layers, which are then clamped between a knife edge and a backup plate to define at least one lateral limit of the seam where the porosity is thus temporarily eliminated, after which liquid nitrile latex material is passed under pressure along the knife edge and toward the backup plate. The first layer filters out any latex film or cured particles or air bubbles which thus do not impair the integrity of the seam. The latex is then cured, and if desired, the sheet material is trimmed away at one side of the seam.
