  • Patent number: 8795462
Abstract: An article is disclosed comprising a network-like pattern of conductive traces formed of at least partially-joined nanoparticles that define randomly-shaped cells that are generally transparent to light and contain a transparent filler material. In a preferred embodiment, the filler material is conductive such as a metal oxide or a conductive polymer. In another preferred embodiment, the filler material is an adhesive that is can be used to transfer the network from one substrate to another. A preferred method of forming the article is also disclosed wherein an emulsion containing the nanoparticles in the solvent phase and the filler material in the water phase is coated onto a substrate. The emulsion is dried and the nanoparticles self-assemble to form the traces and the filler material is deposited in the cells. An electroluminescent device is also disclosed wherein the article of the invention forms a transparent electrode in the device.

Abstract: Compositions, methods, apparatuses, kits, and combinations are described for applying a colorant to a surface. Compositions are formulated to be applied and affixed to a surface. The compositions may be substantially removed from the surface to remove a portion or substantially all of a stain before being affixed to the surface. The compositions are formulated to be removed by a number of methods including, for example, vacuuming, wet extraction, chemical application, and the like. Compositions may be permanently or semi-permanently affixed to the surface by applying energy thereto in the form of, for example, heat, pressure, emitted waves, an emitted electrical field, a magnetic field, and/or a chemical. The compositions may also be utilized in the form of a kit or in conjunction with a design device, such as a stencil, to control the application of the composition to create, for example, a pattern on the surface.

  • Patent number: 8603613
Abstract: A system and method for decorative elements having multiple visual appearances. The decorative elements may present different colors and/or other visual appearance characteristics and yet function as a durable construction material, like a traditional brick, tile or shingle. The decorative elements may receive a mechanical operation that permanently physically alters the decorative element, such as a cutting, sawing, drilling or molding operation, while the decorative element is functional to provide a controllable visual appearance both before and after the physical alteration. The decorative elements may be autonomous in that power needed to change visual appearance states can be gathered by an integrated energy harvesting device, such as a solar cell. A color chip system may be used to select decorative element features.
