Abstract: The invention relates to a coating element, a coated fibrous web, and methods for manufacturing the same. The invention also relates to a particle granule. The coating element comprises a pigment binder structure granule formed from pigment particles and a binding agent and, possibly, additives, the pigment particles being bound to one another through a binding agent. According to the invention, the shape of the granule is essentially rotationally symmetrical, comprising an inner part and a crust part, the density of the inner part being lower than the crust part. The granules can be prepared by spray drying from aqueous slurry that contains a pigment, binder, and possible additives. The shape of the coating elements can be altered by using controlled deformation. They can be flattened, for example, by calendering to form the surface of a desired shape, and attached to the surface of the fibrous web without a separate binder or by adding a small amount of binder only.
Abstract: Disclosed is an uncoated facestock product having enhanced printability, holdout, and edge wick properties, which are attained through a combination of manufacturing techniques including increased refining of the furnish, sizing, increased hard nip calendering, and the use of extended nip calendering. The resulting uncoated facestock product has the following properties: a density between about 0.7 and 1.0 g/cc and/or an ash content of less than about 15% as measured by the 525 ° C. standard test method; and a finished surface having a Sheffield smoothness between about 50 and 150 Sheffield units and a Parker Print Surf roughness (PPS-10) less than about 5.0 microns.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for applying reference or grid markings to wallboard during the manufacturing process is disclosed. Reference or grid markings are applied to one sheet of cover paper at a location between the originating cover paper rolls and the cover paper creaser or creasers. This is accomplished by locating and aligning multiple print heads across the width of the continuously passing cover paper, such that markings are ejected onto the cover paper in a specific and coordinated fashion. In addition to using any suitable commercially-available computer equipment to coordinate printer head activity, this function is accomplished by attaching each print head to a common horizontal support element and provide individual adjustments that are perpendicular to, and with the directional flow of the passing cover paper.

Abstract: In the conventional process of producing a coated paper, the use of a furnish that is characterized by a base sheet fiber content made of about 60 to 85 weight percent of a bleached thermomechanical pulp (TMP), about 10 to 35 weight percent of a bleached chemical pulp and 0 to about 15 weight percent of a deinked pulp, and also comprising about 12 to 20 weight percent of an inorganic filler, with a freeness below 50 ml Csf and a brightness over 75° ISO, gives a coated paper of the same or superior quality and at a much lower cost than the usual coated paper obtained through a conventional process.

Abstract: The invention relates to security paper (1) including at least one zone (2; 3) that reacts with nonpolar solvents. The paper also includes a barrier (4) that is impermeable to nonpolar solvents between a first outside face (10) of the security paper and the zone (2; 3) that reacts with the solvents.
Abstract: A method of transparentizing a cellulosic substrate which is suitable for use as a mailer or envelope having at least one transparentized portion is provided. The method includes the application of a transparentizing composition to a substrate by a flexographic printing apparatus in which one or more of the transparentizing composition, the substrate, and the transfer rollers of the printing apparatus are preferably cooled prior to application in order to raise the viscosity of the composition and allow more of the composition to be transferred to the substrate surface. A primer composition may also be applied to the substrate prior to application of the transparentizing composition in order to aid in penetration of the transparentizing composition.
Abstract: A resin-coated paper support (coated paper) including a resin coating layer on a paper support, in which the resin coating layer contains a water-soluble polymer having a hydrophobic group at a terminal thereof, and a hydrophobic dispersion.
Abstract: Disclosed is a recording paper which comprises (a) a cellulosic base sheet having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, said base sheet having a dielectric constant of at least about 1.5 under conditions of about 50 percent relative humidity and at about 23° C., said base sheet having a dielectric constant of no more than about 10 under conditions of about 50 percent relative humidity and at about 23° C., said base sheet having, under conditions of about 50 percent relative humidity and at about 23° C., a surface resistivity of at least about 1×107 ohms per square, said base sheet having, under conditions of about 50 percent relative humidity and at about 23° C., a surface resistivity of no more than about 1×1013 ohms per square; (b) on the first surface of the base sheet an image receiving coating comprising a monomeric or polymeric material, said image receiving coating having a glass transition temperature of at least about 55° C.
Abstract: A support for image recording material containing a base paper, both surfaces of which are coated with a polyolefin resin and/or a polyester resin, wherein the base paper contains kraft pulp made from acacia as a component thereof. The base paper preferably contains an anionic polyacrylamide in an amount of 0.05 to 1.5% by mass and an epoxidized fatty acid amide in an amount of 0.05 to 0.8% by mass.
Abstract: A multiple-ply paperboard material having improved oil and grease resistance properties, and improved stain masking properties to minimize the appearance of oil and grease stains in the paperboard material, and a method for forming same. The multiple-ply paperboard includes a substantially paperboard substrate having at least two plies, including at least a top ply and a bottom ply formed of substantially paperboard material, a grease resistant coating, a pigment-based pre-coating and a pigment-based top coating. The grease resistant coating includes a fluorochemical component applied to the outer surface of the top ply and to the outer surface of the bottom ply to hinder the penetration and migration of grease and oil into said substantially paperboard substrate through both the top ply and the bottom ply. The pigment-based pre-coating is applied to the top ply over the grease resistant coating, while the top coating is applied over the pre-coating.

Abstract: An image recording sheet comprising a substrate having a first surface opposite a second surface. A toner receptor layer coated on at least the first surface of the substrate includes a binder having a concentration from about 19 dry wt % to about 80 dry wt % of the receptor layer. The binder holds a conductive polymer and a filler having a concentration from about 19 dry wt % to about 80 dry wt % of the receptor layer. The filler interacts with the conductive polymer to provide an antistat imparting to the toner receptor layer a surface resistivity in a range from 1011 ohms/square to 1013 ohms/square. The image recording sheet uses conducting polymers selected from polyanilines and polythiophenes in a concentration from about 0.5 dry wt % to about 3.0 dry wt % of the receptor layer. Suitable fillers have an average particle size from about 5 nm to about 100 nm.
