Abstract: A material and method for production of ballistic armor. One or more absorbing layers are inserted between layers of woven cloth made of high strength fibers. Mechanical energy absorbing layers are of two types, either a large number of small objects in loose contact with one another which will dissipate energy by moving traversely to the direction of impact, embedded in a matrix along with randomly oriented high strength fibers, or a large number of small objects in a matrix along with parallel oriented high strength fibers. A method for production of such a layered device is also taught. The material may be used in body armor including vests and helmets as well as applied to construction of shields and armored vehicles.

  • Publication number: 20080182048
Abstract: A fibrous material suitable for a wipe, cleaning implement or any other purpose has multiple functional zones that are distinctly separated. The functional areas or zones are created in the fibrous structure by essentially eliminating the porous structure in the border regions between the different zones to create a capillary barrier. The elimination of the porous structure in this border region eliminates the passage of fluids between the zones and allows for both wet and dry zones.

  • Publication number: 20080176060
Abstract: Novel catalytic membranes and methods of synthesizing the membranes are disclosed herein. The technology involves the synthesis of a new type of permselective membrane that combines a hollow porous support with strategically positioned catalytic and selective transport functions to overcome thermodynamic, kinetic, and thermal obstacles, such as in the production of hydrogen. Sub-micron, dense metallic catalysts and films may be deposited within porous hollow substrates to create the membranes using the techniques of sol slip casting, film coating and electroless plating.

Abstract: To provide a material for use at high temperatures of several 100° C. which is simple and quick to produce, the invention provides a composite having a layer structure and a process for producing it, which comprises the following steps: a) provision of at least two plates which each have at least one main area of extension, b) stacking of the plates in such a way that a main area of extension of one plate is essentially opposite a main area of extension of the subsequent plate in the stack, c) joining of the stacked plates to form a block using a sinterable composition, d) carrying out a heat treatment on the block so that at least sintering of the sinterable composition occurs and a strong composite body is formed from the block.

  • Patent number: 7393577
Abstract: A fiber reinforced core panel is formed from strips of plastics foam helically wound with layers of rovings to form webs which may extend in a wave pattern or may intersect transverse webs. Hollow tubes may replace foam strips. Axial rovings cooperate with overlying helically wound rovings to form a beam or a column. Wound roving patterns may vary along strips for structural efficiency. Wound strips may alternate with spaced strips and spacers between the strips enhance web buckling strength. Continuously wound rovings between spaced strips permit folding to form panels with reinforced edges. Continuously wound strips are helically wrapped to form annular structures, and composite panels may combine both thermoset and thermoplastic resins.

  • Publication number: 20080145643
Abstract: A bond coat is applied to a substrate of a gas turbine engine component the component. A barrier coat is applied atop the bond coat. The applying of the bond coat includes: applying a first layer having an as-applied first roughness; and applying a second layer atop the first layer, the second layer having an as-applied second roughness, greater than the first roughness. In the resulting coating system, the first and second layers may have different properties (e.g., greater porosity, pore size, and/or splat size for the second layer).

  • Patent number: 7371451
Abstract: A structural panel comprised of a plurality of distinct layers of cylindrical foam elements each covered with a fiber-reinforced composite material. The cylindrical foam elements are arranged in layers such that the elements of adjacent layers are arranged non-parallel to one another. A pair of facesheets are secured to opposing surfaces of the cylindrical foam elements. The structural panel is high in strength, structural stiffness, and yet relatively low in weight, and is suitable for a variety of aerospace and other applications.
