  • Patent number: 7682486
Abstract: The invention provides a low density paperboard material and associated method for use in producing an insulated container, and is especially well-suited for making cups. The paperboard material comprises a paperboard web including wood fibers and expanded microspheres, and has a relatively low density ranging from about 6 to about 10 lb/3MSF/mil, a relatively high caliper ranging from about 24 to about 35 mil, and an internal bond strength of at least about 80×10?3 ft-lbf., preferably at least 100×10?3 lft-lbf. For applications such as cups the material is also coated on one or both sides with a barrier coating, preferably low density polyethylene, to limit liquid penetration into the web. The low density paperboard material of the invention is convertible for manufacture of containers, particularly cups, and exhibits insulative properties comparable to higher cost materials conventionally used to make cups.

  • Patent number: 7651759
Abstract: The invention relates to a digital printing method and a paper or board applicable thereto. In digital printing, the surface of a paper or board is charged electrically, toner particles are brought to the surface in an electric field in accordance with the printing, and the particles are melted fast to the surface with the help of heat for forming the printing. According to the invention, the paper or board (2) is provided with a coating layer (3) containing an electrically chargeable acrylate copolymer of ethylene, which receives the toner that is fused to the coating with the help of infra red radiation. Suitable coating polymers are especially methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylate copolymers of ethylene (EMA, EEA and EBA). Especially in packaging boards, besides the digitally printable layer, the polymer coatings can comprise a water vapour or oxygen barrier layer for protecting the packed product, and a heat-sealable layer on the opposite side of the board for sealing the package.

A radiant heat preventive film containing a metal oxide is disposed on at least one of the external surface of the inner container or the internal surface of the outer container, wherein the radiant heat preventive film has a reflectivity of 35% or higher with a wavelength of 15 ?m. When the thickness of the radiant heat preventive film is 3000 ?, the Hall mobility “x” (cm2/V·s) and the carrier concentration “y” (cm?3) of the same satisfy the following formulae: y??5×1020x+2×1021 and y??6×1018x+3×1020. When the thickness of the radiant heat preventive film is 5000 ?, x and y satisfy the following formulae: y??5×1020x+3×1021 and y??6×1018x+7×1020. Such radiant heat preventive films can have high reflectivity.

  • Patent number: 6946433
Abstract: Durable antimicrobial treatments for textile fabrics are provided. Such treatments preferably comprise silver ions, particularly as constituents of inorganic metal salts or zeolites. This particular treatment requires the presence of a resin binder, either as a silver-ion overcoat or as a component of a dye bath mixture admixed with the silver-ion antimicrobial compound. Such a treatment is extremely durable on such substrates; after a substantial number of standard launderings and dryings, the treatment does not wear away in any appreciable amount and thus the substrate retains its antimicrobial activity. The particular treatment method, as well as the treated textile fabrics are also encompassed within this invention.

Abstract: A unique primer emulsion chemistry yields excellent adhesion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)resin to clay coated paperboard (with high starch content)at reduced coatweights of the primer emulsion and the resin as compared to other primer and tie-resin chemistries currently employed for moisture barrier applications. A primer used for adhesion enhancement is an ammonium catalyzed, self-crosslinking copolymer of ethylene-vinyl acetate with N-methylol acryl amide functional groups attached to a polymer backbone. Use of the primer in amounts up to about 0.5 pounds per ream permits PET coatweights of as low as 10-12 lbs per ream and lower for some applications.
