  • Patent number: 5824175
Abstract: A hot melt carpet seaming tape and a method of installation are effective to minimize seam peaking at carpet joints. A seaming iron used in the installation has a grooved base plate and connected liquid channels which accomplish seam welding of carpet backings at the seam. As the two carpet edges come together behind the iron, the backings are seam welded by the liquid adhesive in a butt joint, adding significant strength to the seam in the carpet. The carpet seaming tape has a narrow hot melt adhesive strip, preferably less than two inches wide. When the carpet seaming tape is used in conjunction with seam welding (seam sealing), with hot melt adhesive applied between the edges of the carpet backings, the assembled carpeting when stretched will not tend to peak significantly at the seam.

  • Patent number: 5763027
Abstract: An insensitive composite pressure vessel for containing an energetic compound includes at least two fibers having different temperature resistance characteristics. A dynamic fiber loses a substantial portion of its tensile strength at a transformation temperature which is preferably substantially less than the combustion temperature of the energetic compound, whereas a stable fiber retains substantially all of its tensile strength at temperatures exceeding the transformation temperature. Hence, a pressure vessel formed of dynamic fibers and stable fibers has sufficient burst strength to resist operating pressures under normal conditions. The vessel loses strength and develops additional orifices to vent combustion products from the energetic compound in the event of an external fire, thereby allowing unintentionally ignited rocket motors to burn substantially in place.

Abstract: A radome structure has an outer first layer of a fiber-reinforced composite material of quartz fibers in a noncrystalline cured oligomeric cyanate ester pre-polymer. A second layer of a syntactic foam underlies and is bonded to the first layer. A third layer of the same fiber-reinforced composite material (although possibly of different thickness) underlies and is bonded to the second layer. A fourth layer of the syntactic foam underlies and is bonded to the third layer. A fifth layer of the same fiber-reinforced composite material (preferably of the same thickness as the first layer) underlies and is bonded to the fourth layer. The structure is formed by layup of the first layer inside a female mold, and successively shaping the remaining layers and tacking them to each preceding layer. The shell produced in this manner can be joined to conforming shells.

  • Patent number: 5705237
Abstract: Containers incorporating a hydraulically settable structural matrix including a hydraulically settable binder such as cement for use in the storing, dispensing, and/or packaging of food and beverage products are disclosed. The disposable and nondisposable food and beverage articles of manufacture have high tensile, compressive, and flexural strengths, and are lightweight, insulative (if desired), inexpensive, and more environmentally compatible than those currently used. These disposable containers and cups are particularly useful for dispensing hot and cold food and beverages in the fast food restaurant environment. The structural matrix of the food and beverage containers includes a hydraulic cement paste (formed from the reaction of water with, e.g., a portland-type cement) preferably in combination with a rheology-modifying plasticizer, such as methylhydroxyethylcellulose, various aggregate materials, and fibrous materials, which provide desired properties at a cost which is economical.

  • Patent number: 5677053
Abstract: An adhesion structure in which the gel of an acrylic plastisol is strongly adhered to the metallic base material, featuring excellent resistance against corrosion and exhibiting small whitening tendency even under severe conditions for treatment with hot water such as retort processing, and a method of producing the same structure. The acrylic plastisol is applied onto the metallic base material or onto the metallic base material having an organic coating provided with a layer of a thermosetting resin which contains a bisphenol-type epoxy resin and a phenolic resin at a weight ratio of from 99:1 to 85:15, and is gelled by heating and is, at the same time, adhered to the base material via the thermosetting resin layer. The acrylic plastisol is gelled and is strongly adhered onto the thermosetting resin layer within short periods of time. The obtained adhesion structure exhibits excellent resistance against peeling, corrosion and retorting.

  • Patent number: 5665439
Abstract: Articles of manufacture fashioned from sheets having a hydraulically settable matrix are disclosed, particularly food containers, beverage containers and packaging containers. Suitable compositions are prepared by mixing together a hydraulic binder, water, and appropriate additives (such as aggregates, fibers, and rheology-modifying agents) which impart predetermined properties so that a sheet formed therefrom has the desired performance criteria. Hydraulically settable sheets are formed from the mixture by extrusion, then calendering the sheets using a set of rollers and then drying the sheets in an accelerated manner to substantially harden the sheets. The resulting hydraulically settable sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets made from presently used materials like paper, cardboard, polystyrene, or plastic.

  • Patent number: 5660899
Abstract: Heat-reflective and protective sleeving is provided which has both an interior and an exterior convoluted profile. The sleeving includes layers of polymeric material, insulative material and reflective material which is assembled together into the convoluted profiles. A method and apparatus are provided for manufacturing the convoluted sleeving by wrapping a fabric-backed foil over a convoluted polymeric tubing while pushing the laminate into the grooves and over the crests of the convoluted profile of the polymeric tubing. In the preferred arrangement which is shown, this procedure is facilitated by the use of a plurality of worm gears that rotate substantially in unison in order to pull the convoluted polymeric tubing through an area defined by the worm gears, while simultaneously forming the convolutions in the laminate at the same time that the laminate is engaged with the external convoluted surface of the polymeric tubing.

Abstract: An article (2) in which at least part of a surface (8) of a polymeric element has an embossed pattern (6). The article may be either heat-recoverable or non-heat-recoverable. • Patent number: 5658624
Abstract: Hydraulically settable mixtures and methods for extruding such mixtures into a variety of objects which are form-stable in the green state are disclosed. High green strength is achieved by increasing the yield stress of the mixture while maintaining adequate extrudability. Optimizing the particle packing density while including a deficiency of water yields a hydraulically settable mixture which will flow under pressures typically associated with the extrusion of clay or plastic. In addition, a rheology-modifying agent can be added to increase the yield stress of the mixture while not significantly increasing the viscosity. The desired strength properties and other performance criteria of the final hardened extruded product are controlled by adding aggregates, fibers, a hydraulically settable binder, water, and other admixtures.
