  • Patent number: 6383958
Abstract: Nonwoven sheet materials, and adhesive articles formed therefrom are provided that are made with fibers, preferably tensilized nonfracturable staple fibers, and binder fibers, and formed from a combination of interbonding, smooth roll calendering, and pattern embossing techniques. These sheet materials are especially useful as tape backings that are finger tearable in the cross web and the down web directions and also possess a number of other desirable properties, including acceptable tensile strength and enhanced overtaping, for example. A nonwoven sheet material, and adhesive article including the same, can include an embossed pattern having a variety of discontinuous configurations to enhance tearing properties in both the down web and cross web directions.

  • Patent number: 6379790
Abstract: Linerless labels which have a non-quadrate configuration are formed by printing indicia on a first face of a web of label stock and coating the first face with a pressure sensitive adhesive release material, and coating a second face of the web with a pressure sensitive adhesive. A plurality of non-quadrate configuration labels are die-cut from the web, and the labels are taken up in an assembly form in which the labels are readily releasably connected to each other. The labels may be substantially circular in configuration, and connected together in a shingled configuration, a portion of the adhesive of one label overlapping a portion of the top surface of another label. Alternatively, the labels may be connected together with a matrix material having a plurality of paper ties connecting each label to the matrix material or another label.

Abstract: A pressure-sensitive laminate for adhering to various items. The laminate includes a paper layer; a water-impermeable plastic film layer having a first corona-discharge treated surface which is adhesively laminated to the paper layer to form a paper-plastic film laminate having first and second opposed outer surfaces; and an exposed layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating on one of the first or second outer surfaces. The plastic film portion of the laminate has a strength sufficient to allow the film to be stripped in one piece from an item to which the laminate is adhered. The laminate may, if desired, additionally have a layer of a release agent upon an uncoated one of the first and second opposed outer surfaces of the laminate. A preferred use for the laminate is as a pressure-sensitive tape product.

  • Patent number: 6270889
Abstract: This invention provides a composite foil comprising an organic release layer between a metal carrier layer and an ultra-thin copper foil, and a process for producing such composite foils comprising the steps of depositing the organic release layer on the metal carrier layer and then forming an ultra-thin copper foil layer on said organic release layer by electrodeposition. The organic release layer preferably is a nitrogen-containing compound, a sulfur-containing compound, or a carboxylic acid, which provides a uniform bond strength which is adequate to prevent separation of the carrier and ultra-thin copper foil during handling and lamination, but which is significantly lower than the peel strength of a copper/substrate bond, so that the carrier can easily be removed after lamination of the composite foil to an insulating substrate. The invention also includes laminates made from such composite foils and printed wiring boards made from such laminates.

Abstract: An image forming method for forming an image on an optical disk includes forming the image on an intermediate transfer medium or on an image receptive layer separably formed on one surface of the intermediate transfer medium. The intermediate transfer medium and the optical disk are laid so that the surface of the intermediate transfer medium carrying the image and the surface of the optical disk are in close contact with each other. Heat and/or pressure is applied to the intermediate transfer medium to transfer the image or the image receptive layer carrying the image to the optical disk to form a label on the optical disk.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a flushable double-sided release liner. The flushable double-sided release liner is formed by applying a release coating onto both surfaces of a water-sensitive film. The flushable double-sided release liner maintains its integrity and strength when in use, but disperses when placed in contact with water, such as in a conventional sink or toilet. Moreover, the present invention is directed to water-dispersible products, including flushable products, which contain the flushable double-sided release liners.

Abstract: A method of microdissection which involves forming an image field of cells of the tissue sample utilizing a microscope, identifying at least one zone of cells of interest from the image field of cells which at least one zone of cells of interest includes different types of cells than adjacent zones of cells, and extracting the at least one zone of cells of interest from the tissue sample. The extraction is achieved by contacting the tissue sample with a transfer surface that can be selectively activated so that regions thereof adhere to the zone of cells of interest to be extracted. The transfer surface includes a selectively activatable adhesive layer which provides, for example, chemical or electrostatic adherence to the selected regions of the tissue sample. After the transfer surface is activated, the transfer surface and tissue sample are separated.
