Abstract: This relates to blow molded containers, and particularly to the formation of blow molded containers formed of a plastic material which is subjectable to a high degree of biaxial orientation for maximum strength. Two containers are formed in each blow molding operation with each container having throughout the stress areas thereof a high degree of biaxial orientation. A container may be in the form of a bottle having an as formed open bottom which is closed by a metal end unit seamed in place. Other containers will have open mouths closed by conventional closures including metal end units which are seamed to the container body or by closure caps which may be releasably interlocked with the neck finish of the container in several known modes. In every instance the containers are formed with a minimum of scrap. Along those lengths of the loop intended to be fitted to the portions of the door opening between the latter's sharp bends or corners, the gripping section is provided with additional reinforcing members which seat in the base of the channel. The reinforcing members are made of stiff metal but which can be bent slightly, when the sealing strip is fitted into position, so as to hold the sealing strip in a slight curve, in any plane, to match the door shape. At the positions in the loop where sharp bends or corners are required, the sealing strip is completely free of the reinforcing members.

  • Patent number: 4429013
Abstract: An edge guard of the type comprising a metal strip formed into a generally U-shaped transverse cross section having inner and outer legs with beads at the distal ends of the legs via which the edge guard is self-retained on the edge of an object when installed thereon. The cross section has a generally semi-circular contoured base which joins with the two legs. One leg includes an inward offset so that its bead is disposed in inwardly offset relation to the corresponding end of the base. The other leg comprises a straight segment extending straight from the other end of the base to the corresponding bead. The base comprises segments having different radii of curvature. In the free condition of the edge guard, the inner faces of the beads, which bear against opposite sides of an edge when the edge guard is installed thereon, are disposed in non-parallel relation.

  • Patent number: 4419159
Abstract: In the manufacture of plastic bags having interlocking profiled extrusions for the closure, the extruded plastic profile is applied to the moving web of film immediately after extrusion of the profile. The temperature of the moving web is maintained such that the profile adheres to the moving web upon contact and thereafter cools to set the thermoplastic in the desired profile. The moving web of film is maintained under tension so that contraction of the film upon release compensates for the contraction of the locking profile as it cools to prevent puckering of the web. The locking profile is applied to the web in an in-line process which includes folding and heat sealing the moving web of film to form plastic bags.

  • Patent number: 4413033
Abstract: An improved channel-shaped wire carrier is coated with elastomeric material to form an edge protector trim strip of substantially U-shaped transverse cross section. The wire carrier is formed from a continuous metallic wire looped to form looped ends adjacent the edges of the carrier joined by transversely extending lengths of wire spaced from one another longitudinally of the carrier. A plurality of strands of material extend longitudinally of the carrier and are interwoven with the wires to maintain the spaced relation thereof. At least two of the strands are located along the looped ends at each edge of the carrier and are forced together by the curvature of the looped ends prior to the coating operation to form at least a pair of grouped edge strands. The remaining strands are located only along intermediate portions of the base and side flanges of the channel-shaped wire carrier.

  • Patent number: 4392897
Abstract: Molten thermoplastic, such as polyethylene, and a hot melt adhesive are coextruded through a channel shaped profile die. While still molten, the channel shaped strip, having adhesive between the ribs thereof, is brought into contact with a moving web of a thermoplastic, e.g. polyethylene film, which is backed up by a roll at a controlled temperature. The temperature differential between the roll and the molten thermoplastic is maintained so that the thermoplastic adheres to the moving web upon contact and thereafter cools to set the thermoplastic in the channel shaped profile. The web is under tension so that contraction of the film upon release compensates for the contraction of the channel shaped strip as it cools.
