  • Patent number: 6426128
Abstract: Co-processable multi-layer laminates having a high Tg layer and at least one low Tg layer with layers having properties of high strength, lo- or no-haze, and transparency after processing into various multi-layer forms are useful for packaging and container applications. The multi-layer laminate has at least one low Tg layer of a first thermoplastic polyester having at least one crystallization rate inhibitor. The total amount of crystallization rate inhibitor is effective to prevent substantial haze in the low Tg layer upon heating. In most applications, the total amount of crystallization rate inhibitor also does not substantially inhibit strain-induced crystallization of the at least one low Tg layer when the laminate is stretched during processing. The multi-layer laminates of the invention have improved properties such as reduced shrinkage and/or high barrier properties, with a very small amount of high Tg material used to impart these improved properties to the laminate.

Abstract: The specification discloses a layered composite containing a barrier layer comprising clay homogeneously dispersed in a continuous phase of polymeric material. The barrier layer is especially useful in the manufacture of liquid food containers. The clay/polymer barrier layer is formed by dispersing the clay in molten polymeric material to form a homogeneously dispersed clay in a continuous polymer phase. The barrier layer is then applied adjacent one surface of a paperboard component of the composite at a thickness ranging from about 1 to 30 microns. The paperboard may be coated or uncoated at the time the barrier layer is applied, and additional polymeric barrier layers and tie or adhesive layers may be used in combination with the barrier layer to provide reduced oxygen and water vapor transport through the composite.

Abstract: A tubular, multilayer film comprises a central barrier layer and a pair of adhesive layers on opposite sides of the central barrier layer. The adhesive layers completely cover the central barrier layer. Opposing edges of the central barrier layer overlap longitudinally along the tubular, multilayer film. The total thickness of the central barrier layers in the overlapping portion is substantially the same as the thickness of the central barrier layer in the non-overlapping portion. The tubular, multilayer film also includes inner and outer surface layers. The inner surface layer extends completely around the interior of the tubular, multilayer film, and the outer surface layer extends completely around the exterior of the tubular, multilayer film.

Abstract: A multi-layer, water-soluble film, a method of producing such film, and a method of packaging a chemical in such film are provided. The multi-layer film comprises a continuous layer of water-soluble material suitable for forming an outer layer of a bag, and a barrier coating affixed to discrete areas of the continuous layer, leaving a plurality of uncoated intervals occurring at repeating distances on the continuous layer. The continuous layer is of sufficient thickness and strength to provide sufficient structural integrity for use as a bag. The barrier coating, suitable for forming the inner surface of a bag, lacks sufficient structural integrity to contain the contents of the bag once the outer layer is substantially dissolved.
