The container includes (i) a molded inner layer formed from a plastic material, the inner layer having a vertical length and a carbon-treated inner surface; and (ii) a molded outer layer formed from recycled plastic that is substantially coextensive with the inner layer. The recycled outer layer comprises at least 40% by weight of the overall weight of the container, but can comprise more than 90% by weight, depending upon the needs of the application. In a preferred embodiment, the thickness of the inner and/or outer layers is controllably adjusted along their respective vertical lengths.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1999Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Plastipak Packaging, Inc.Inventor: William A. Patent number: 6465064Abstract: Compositions having improved gas/vapor barrier qualities are described. The compositions are composed of a substantially non-polar resin and a lamellar filler, the lamellar filler delaminating under high shear, to increase its aspect ratio. Also described are compositions composed of a non-polar thermoplastic resin filled with platelets of talc having an aspect ratio of at least 5; the platelets have an average aspect ratio of between 16-30 and a CIE whiteness index of at least 40.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1997Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Betts UK LimitedInventor: Mark Graham Branch

Patent number: 6461702Abstract: A coated membrane for use in controlling the oxygen and carbon dioxide ratio inside of a package that holds respiring produce such as fruits, vegetables or flowers. The coated membrane comprises a porous substrate, such as a polypropylene film, and has an oxygen permeance in the range of 5,000 to 30,000,000 cc/100 in2-atmosphere-day. The substrate is coated with a material that is substantially impermeable to oxygen, such as an acrylic emulsion, so that the amount of substrate surface area covered with the coating causes a decrease in the oxygen permeance of the substrate. The coating is applied to the substrate using a flexographic or rotogravure or rotary silkscreen process. An aperture of approximately 0.15 mm is placed in the coated membrane to allow the internal pressure to approximate the external pressure without a significant loss of relative humidity.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1999Date of Patent: October 8, 2002Assignee: River Ranch Fresh Foods-Salinas, Inc.Inventor: Sannai Gong

Patent number: 6458438Abstract: An article of manufacture includes an oxygen scavenger and a zeolite. The article can be in the form of e.g. a film or sealing compound. A package can be made from the article for containing an oxygen-sensitive article such as food. The zeolite reduces migration of odor causing by-products of the oxygen scavenging process. A method of making an article of manufacture having reduced migration of by-products of an oxygen scavenging reaction includes providing an article including an oxygen scavenger and a zeolite; and exposing the article to actinic radiation.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2001Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Cryovac, Inc.Inventors: Thomas A.
