Patent number: 5474824Abstract: A process for producing a shaped porous article includes the steps of providing an extrudate of a fluoropolymer material which is capable of being stretched and bilaterally stretching the extrudate along a longitudinal axis. The stretching step is carried out under conditions sufficient to yield an article which is substantially uniformly stretched over a major portion of its length. After stretching, the material has a unique through-pore microstructure characterized by elongate nodes connected by fibrils. The stretched material is sintered while being maintained in its stretched state to produce the shaped porous article. A significant feature of the inventive process is that stretching is carried out by displacing both ends of the extruded material as opposed to known method wherein only one end of an extruded material is stretched, resulting in a microporous fluoropolymer article which are different than conventional fluoropolymer stretching/expansion processes.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1994Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Assignee: Atrium Medical CorporationInventors: Paul Martakos, Theodore Karwoski, Steve A. Patent number: 5474846Abstract: The present invention provides a method for coating the interior surface of a cylinder with a uniform, relatively thick layer of a polymeric material. The method includes the steps of dispersing a particulate polymeric material into the interior cavity of a cylinder. Any openings in the cylinder are then closed. The cylinder is then subjected to rotational movement while at the same time subjecting the cylinder to oscillation in a vertical plane. The polymeric material is then heated to a temperature above the melting point of the polymeric material, and maintained at that temperature for a time sufficient to coat the polymeric material onto the interior surface of the cylinder. The rotation and oscillation of the cylinder is then halted and the polymeric material is cooled.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1993Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Inventor: George A. Haldenby

Patent number: 5447762Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for locally introducing fluid, such as a gas, at a predetermined location into molten resin downstream from a resin injection aperture to form a hollow part. The gas is utilized at the localized area to distribute the molten resin, to eliminated molded in stress and to prevent formation of sink marks in the part during resin solidification. An overflow reservoir outside of the mold cavity is filled with the resin during resin injection and then the gas is introduced into the reservoir through a fluid aperture and into the part. The reservoir creates a cocoon of solidified material to act as a seal to prevent gas leakage. One hollow body formed by the method and system includes a substantially endless hollow body portion with a fluid opening for communicating the interior of the hollow body portion with the locally introduced fluid. The hollow body provides an internal gas manifold and means for greater structural integrity.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1993Date of Patent: September 5, 1995Assignee: Melea LimitedInventor: Norman S.
