The oxide insulating layer (3) is formed by applying a precursor solution of a metallic oxide onto the chromium oxide containing layer (2) by a sol-gel method or an organic acid salt pyrolytic method.

    Abstract: A packing material having improved chemical resistance formed of poly(phenylene) sulfide yarn and polytetrafluoroethylene yarn is provided. Each of the yarns may be treated with PTFE dispersion and, optionally, with graphite. The two yarns may be twisted together or laid-up side-by-side and braided together and the structure may be impregnated with a polytetrafluoroethylene based binder and lubricant. The resulting packing material has improved temperature characteristics, heat transfer characteristics, wear resistance, provides a dense impervious packing and is dimensionally stable in addition to the improved chemical resistance. A packing material prepared from yarns treated only with a PTFE dispersion is especially useful in the paper making industry and for other applications wherein dark colored yarns are not permissible.

C. with 0.1 cN/tex pre-stress and a permanent lengthening of less than 1.5 percent at a tire pressure of 2 bar and a temperature of 100.degree. C., so as to reduce shrinkage during vulcanization and in tires heated in operation and so as to provide a quieter running tire. The fatigue resistance of this polyester tire cord suffers a drop in tensile strength of less than 20 percent measured at 10.8 MC with 6 percent strain and 6 percent compression so that tires made from the polyester cord have a greater durability and increased life.

    Abstract: High tensile and torque strength threads are provided on a thermoplastic composite rod by first cutting a thread at a relatively short pitch into an end of the rod. Thermoplastic composite tape is then wound in tight conformance to the cut thread so that the fibers of the tape align with the desired helix angle of the thread to be created. The rod and the tape are heated at their junction to above melt temperatures during the winding process to increase adhesion between the rod and the tape. While the end of the rod and the wound tape are at above melt temperatures, the end of the rod and the tape are compressed in a die conforming to the desired ultimate configuration of the thread. The tape and rod are then permitted to cool until sufficiently hardened to permit release of the compressing die without deformation of the threaded end of the tape. The result is a thermoplastic composite rod having high tensile and torque strength at its threaded end.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a packing used in sealing two members. As the packing material, by using a material having the surface of a flexible graphite sheet cut to a width of less than 5 mm with fibers, or a material prepared by laminating a flexible graphite sheet cut to a width of less than 5 mm with at least one of reinforcing fiber of foil material, and covering its surface with fibers, or a material prepared by impregnating a principal component composed of flexible graphite particles with at least one of short fiber, rubber, resin or lubricant to form a bar-like structure and covering its surface with fibers, a packing material which can be either twisted or braided is obtained. By fabricating a packing by using any one of such packing materials, a cord-like packing is obtained without having to produce many packings matched to the dimensions of the members.

    Abstract: An article adapted to be used as a liquid transfer wick and method for making same. The core is comprised of a heat fusible, nonwoven textile sheet material that is chemically inert to many solvents and oils. A binder is applied to the core in an open mesh braid to maintain the core in a predetermined compact condition. The outer portions of the core are heat fused to the binder forming a unitary fray resistant structure by the application of a flow of heated air which melts outer portions of the core exposed within the binder. The flow of heated air may be increased to create cavities in the outer portions of the core, thereby forming a wick that is absorbent along the outer longitudinal surface, as well as at the wick ends.

    Abstract: A steel cord for reinforcing rubber. It is made of three steel filaments all having different diameters from one another. The small-diameter and medium-diameter ones of the three filaments have internal stresses adapted to be released when the cord is cut at both ends thereof. Owing to these stresses, the diameter of the cord is adapted to increase after it is cut at both ends. At the same time, the medium-diameter and small-diameter filaments retract inwardly from the ends of the large-diameter and medium-diameter ones, respectively.

    Abstract: A multi-layer film of improved adhesive strength and other properties is made by combining a layer of polyimide and one or more layers of fluoropolymer selected from the group consisting of PTFE, thermally compatible TFE copolymers, blends thereof, PVF.sub.2, thermally compatible VF.sub.2 copolymers, blends thereof, PCTFE, thermally compatible CTFE copolymers, and blends thereof. It has been found that the peel adhesion between the polyimide layer and any fluoropolymer layer is greatly improved over known products. Laminated composites of improved adhesion and cohesion are made using such a multi-layer film and at least one fluoropolymer film. The fluoropolymer film is thermally weldable to the polyimide film.
