Silane, Silicone Or Siloxane In Coating Patents (Class 428/391)
  • Patent number: 7419721
Abstract: The present invention is directed to sizing compositions for glass fibers and glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic resins. The sizing composition comprises a maleic anhydride copolymer. Thermoplastic polyamide resin articles reinforced with glass fibers at least partially coated with a residue of the sizing composition can demonstrate a surprising improvement in strength of the reinforced polyamide resin when lubricated with a fatty acid metal salt and in the hydrolysis resistance when exposed to boiling water/ethylene glycol medium.

Abstract: A sizing composition that permits in-line chopping and drying of reinforcement fibers for reinforcing thermoset resins is provided. The size composition includes at least one coupling agent and one or more blocked polyurethane film forming agents. The blocking agent preferably de-blocks at a temperature that permits simultaneous or nearly simultaneous de-blocking and curing of the polyurethane film former. The sized fiber strands may be chopped to form chopped strand segments and dried in a fluidized bed oven, such as a Cratec® drying oven, in-line. The chopped fiber strands may then be used in a bulk molding compound and molded into a reinforced composite article. Chopping the glass fibers in-line lowers the manufacturing costs for products produced from the sized fiber bundles. Further, because the reinforcement fibers can be chopped and dried at a much faster rate with the inventive size composition compared to conventional off-line chopping processes, productivity is increased.

Abstract: In general, this invention relates to a ceramic composite exhibiting enhanced toughness and decreased brittleness, and to a process of preparing the ceramic composite. The ceramic composite comprises a first matrix that includes a first ceramic material, preferably selected from the group including alumina (Al2O3), mullite (3Al2O3.2SiO2), yttrium aluminate garnet (YAG), yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), celsian (BaAl2Si2O8) and nickel aluminate (NiAl2O4). The ceramic composite also includes a porous interphase region that includes a substantially non-sinterable material. The non-sinterable material can be selected to include, for example, alumina platelets. The platelets lie in random 3-D orientation and provide a debonding mechanism, which is independent of temperature in chemically compatible matrices. The non-sinterable material induces constrained sintering of a ceramic powder resulting in permanent porosity in the interphase region.

Abstract: With the hardener particle of the present invention, because siloxane or an alkoxy group is bonded to a central metal located on a surface, an adhesive prepared by dispersing the hardener particles in an epoxy resin together with a silane coupling agent hardly causes reaction between the hardener particles and the silane coupling agent at ambient temperature whereby the preserving property of the adhesive is high. Because no siloxane is bonded to metal chelate or metal alcoholate at the part other than the surface of the hardener particles, the hardener particles are broken when the adhesive is heated, and the metal chelate and the metal alcoholate on the part other than the surface of the hardener particles reacts with the silane coupling agent to form cation, thereby polymerizing the epoxy resin with the cation to harden the adhesive even at low temperature within shorter time.

Abstract: Increased stability of derivitization agents on the surfaces of packing material used in choromatography is described. In particular, the stability of the organosilanes on silicia surfaces used in chromatography is increased, thereby creating a more durable coating of organosilanes. By increasing its stability, the organosilane entity becomes more resistant to de-bonding and the durability of the underlying surface is enhanced against dissolution. Thus, chromatographic separations are able to be performed at higher and lower pH ranges and higher temperatures. The stability can be increased through attachment of polydentate silanes which are either pre-polymerized and then surface bonded or can be bonded first and then cross-polymerized afterward, yielding a polymerized polycarbosilane backbone that is very stable against hydrolytic cleavage conditions.
