Abstract: Cementitious mixtures, such as concrete, can be reinforced by adding one or more ductile but strong synthetic copolymer microfibers to the mixture. The synthetic copolymer microfibers improve local energy dissipation and bear load, taking the driving force for crack propagation away from the crack tip and thus reinforcing the cementitious mixture against the propagation of microscopic cracks. The resulting mixtures have an improved balance of strength properties.

Abstract: A melt-processed protein composition formed from a protein, plasticizer, and an electrophilic reagent is provided. The electrophilic reagent, for instance, may be selected to undergo a nucleophilic addition reaction with free sulfhydryl and/or thiyl radicals to help minimize the formation of disulfide crosslinking bonds that could otherwise lead to protein aggregation during melt processing. To enhance the degree to which the electrophilic reagent can limit crosslinking, a plasticizer is also employed that helps to mediate the adsorption of the electrophilic reagent into the internal structure of the protein, where it can be more stably retained. Furthermore, the temperature and shear rate employed during melt blending may also be selected to be relatively low to help limit polypeptide dissociation, thereby minimizing the impact of aggregation and embrittlement.

Abstract: An insulating varnish forms an insulating coating film having a shape that corresponds to the shape of an opening of a die, having a uniform thickness. The insulating varnish is applied onto a surface of a conductor, subsequently passes through a die to remove the excess applied insulating varnish, and is then dried or baked to form an insulating coating film on the surface of the conductor. The insulating varnish has a viscosity of 10 Pa·s or more measured by a B-type viscometer at 30° C. The insulating varnish preferably contains no filler, and is preferably a polyimide precursor solution. Since the insulating varnish has a high viscosity, baking and solidification can be performed while maintaining a shape formed when the insulating varnish passes through a die.
