  • Patent number: 6461702
Abstract: A coated membrane for use in controlling the oxygen and carbon dioxide ratio inside of a package that holds respiring produce such as fruits, vegetables or flowers. The coated membrane comprises a porous substrate, such as a polypropylene film, and has an oxygen permeance in the range of 5,000 to 30,000,000 cc/100 in2-atmosphere-day. The substrate is coated with a material that is substantially impermeable to oxygen, such as an acrylic emulsion, so that the amount of substrate surface area covered with the coating causes a decrease in the oxygen permeance of the substrate. The coating is applied to the substrate using a flexographic or rotogravure or rotary silkscreen process. An aperture of approximately 0.15 mm is placed in the coated membrane to allow the internal pressure to approximate the external pressure without a significant loss of relative humidity.

Abstract: This disclosure describes a processing approach for the rapid and efficient in-situ polymerization of specially prepared precursor mixtures to achieve near-net-shape production of objects/articles with exact dimensions. The process relies on the use of polymerizable compositions comprised of a mixture of a reactive plasticizer and an initiator, optionally also including a dead polymer, which compositions are semi-solid-like and induce little shrinkage upon curing as a result of their partially polymerized nature prior to processing. The articles of the invention have a surface and an interior core, the composition of the surface material being distinct from the composition of the core material while at the same time the surface and the core are an integral, monolithic entity. In addition, the articles are dimensionally stable and exhibit high fidelity replication.

  • Patent number: 6132827
Abstract: A multilayer industrial stretch film is provided with at least one cling layer and is formed by coextruding a film-formable polymer with a tackifier. The invention provides a multilayer film having at least two skin layers and at least one core layer in which at least one of the skin layers is derived from a mixture of the tackifier and the film-formable polymer. At least one of the core layers can include a vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI). Beneficial results are obtained by also including a lubricating composition in at least one, if not both, skin layers when at least one of the core layers contains a VCI. The lubricant in the skin layer effectively reduces the extrusion temperature (for blown and cast films), and tends to avoid degrading or igniting the VCI.

Abstract: A sterilizable flexible pouch package includes a non-woven barrier web, a perforated plastic intermediate web, and an imperforate plastic upper web. Line heat seals bonding the webs from a cavity into which a sterilizing steam may enter after passing through the barrier and intermediate webs. The line heat seal bonding the upper and intermediate webs is of the delamination failure type. An access opening is provided for insertion of an object to be sterilized into the cavity after which the access opening is sealed, enclosing the object in the cavity. After sterilizing, the package is opened by peeling apart the upper web from the intermediate web which causes a delamination failure of the line heat seal. Preferred materials enable steam sterilization at temperature of 270.degree. F.
