Patent number: 5665458Abstract: A heat activated applique is formed by forming a heat activated laminate. The heat activated laminate includes, for example, a thermoplastic layer bonded to an indicia-bearing layer such as a pigmented polymeric film or twill. This indicia-bearing layer is bonded to a support layer by a pressure sensitive adhesive. The pressure sensitive adhesive has a preferential adhesion to the support layer. The applique is formed by cutting through the heat activated laminate but not through the support layer to thereby form the desired ornamental applique. Waste portions are separated while the applique itself remains attached to the support layer bonded by the pressure sensitive adhesive. This is then bonded to a substrate while still attached to the support layer by applying heat and pressure through the support layer against the heat activated applique and against a cloth substrate.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1995Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: Specialty Adhesive Film Co.Inventor: John Mahn, Jr.

Patent number: 5418027Abstract: A plastic wall board tape having a raised center section and outwardly extending wing areas which have a coating of fibers adhered to both sides. The raised center of the tape is weakened at the top to cause the tape to crease in a straight line when it is folded at an inside or outside corner to define a straight edge at the corner joint. The combination of the rigid water impervious tape and the fibers allows the tape to be applied over imperfectly fitted wall board joints with large imperfections because the fibers will achieve a mechanical bond with the wall board compound or other joint materials, allowing a slow cure, and the tape will not be softened by the compound. When used on an inside corner, the tape can be finished merely by striking the outer edge with compound as the top surface is a finish surface and requires paint only. The tape can have triangular cutouts in the wings and removable end strips to facilitate taping of curved corner joints.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1994Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Inventor: John S. Conboy

Patent number: 5082711Abstract: A flocked yarn that is formed from a carrier thread with an adhesive coating, and flock that is disposed therearound. The flock is in the form of a flock mixture that includes at least polyamide and polyester flock. The polyester flock assures a high fastness of light for the flocked yarn. To improve the properties of use, the flocked yarn can also be provided with a certain amount of aramid flock.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1990Date of Patent: January 21, 1992Assignee: Uniroyal Englebert Textilcord S.A.Inventor: Robert L. Patent number: 5061539Abstract: A vandal resistant upholstered seat or seat insert comprises a substrate formed of a hard material such as plastic, fiberglass, steel or the like; a vertical pile fabric having a non-coated backing covering the outer surface of the seat insert, with the vertical pile fabric including a plurality of generally upright fibers embedded in a backing material, with the fibers and the backing material being formed such that the backing and vertical fibers are accessible to a liquid adhesive applied to the underside of the backing material; and a layer of high-strength adhesive permeating the backing material from the underside and bonding securely the backing material and upright fibers to the substrate, the adhesive providing a fabric to substrate bond that exceeds the tensile strength of the fabric itself or has a peeling strength of at least twenty-five (25) pounds per inch width of fabric.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1990Date of Patent: October 29, 1991Inventors: Keith A. McDowell, Vaughn L. Clark

Patent number: 5059452Abstract: A flocked polyurethane foam fabric and method for manufacturing the same for which flock fibers imbedded in an adhesive on the foam are permanently flattened and entangled. Dry ink is transferred onto the flock fibers at the same time that flattening of the fibers is taking place. The flock fibers are thermally set into their flattened state along an outer surface of a polyurethane foam base of the fabric. Flattening the flock fibers causes the entanglement of the flock, thereby improving the hand, appearance, drapeability, abrasion resistance, water repellency and heat insulation qualities for apparel items over that of unflattened flock fibers.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1989Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Inventor: William J. Squires

Patent number: 5026586Abstract: The shell, which is size and contoured to fit the underside of the roof of the vehicle, is composed of a core of relatively rigid wire mesh embedded in and tightly bonded to a void-free unitary layer of a relatively rigid plastic material enveloping the wire mesh. One type of vehicle headliners have a foam backed cloth or a foam backed plastic film bonded to the side of the shell which will face toward the interior of the vehicle. In a preferred type of vehicle headliners a velour-like coating of short fibers (most preferably nylon fibers) is affixed to and projects from the vehicular interior side of the shell.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1989Date of Patent: June 25, 1991Inventor: Thomas E.
