  • Patent number: 6546667
Abstract: A fly trap includes a cylindrical side wall made of a mesh material; a bottom wall located proximate (i.e., “at or near”) the bottom end of the side wall; a top wall located proximate the top end of the side wall; a conical entry conduit extending from proximate the bottom wall and providing an entry path to the interior chamber of the fly trap; and a lure holding device for holding a fly lure composition beneath the bottom opening of the entry conduit. The entry conduit may include an extending flange member that forms at least a portion of the bottom wall of the trap. Preferably, the top wall and/or some other part of the fly trap includes a light reflecting device, such as a prism or reflector, to help attract attention to the trap in the daylight. Also, to help attract attention to the trap at night, one or more surfaces may be coated with or constructed from a material that glows in the dark (e.g., a powder containing a commercially available phosphorescent material).

  • Patent number: 6546668
Abstract: A bait station designed to be deployed in an agricultural environment to exterminate flying insects such as fruit flies. The bait station consists of a plurality of shells each providing wall and roof sections. A hinge is provided to pivotable couple the shells together. A locking mechanism is used to lock the shells in a deployment mode. The locking mechanism can include a tab and slot arrangement. There are a plurality of holes on the bait station to disperse the attractant of the bait and attract flying sections. The bottom of the bait station is open assisting in the dissipation of the bait and to enable the flying insect to easily enter the bait station within having to walk through a small hole. An awning extends a sloped roof laterally past the outer wall to keep water and other debris away from the venting holes. A bait holder, containing bait, engages with the wall of the bait station. Flying insects digest the bait and die.

  • Patent number: 6532695
Abstract: The insect trap has a top and bottom that, when connected, form a chamber for luring and containing insects. The main entry for insects is located on the bottom of the insect trap. The insect trap has a plurality of lure support structures that will accommodate many different varieties of lure, to include projections for holding card lures, an annulus for holding a cylinder or vial, either of which contain lure, and a chamber with an adjustable plug that may hold lure or may be used as a vent to control air flow, or may serve as a second access for insect entry. The insect trap has an overall cylindrical shape, with side walls that will easily accommodate an adherent type lure. The flat sides of the insect trap enable a user to more easily examine the contents of the trap without disturbing or directly contacting the contents. The insect trap has a set of legs and a device for suspension, allowing the insect trap to be used either hanging or on a surface.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for detecting the presence of wood destroying subterranean termites. The apparatus includes a housing having a hollow chamber with a closed upper portion (top) and an open lower portion (bottom) that is secured to a monitor stick to be inserted in the ground. The hollow chamber top has a peripheral flange that overhangs or extends beyond the perimeter of the chamber. A monitor stick is inserted into and secured in the chamber interior and in the ground. Abstract: An apparatus for providing a continuous slow release of compressed gas includes a pressure vessel and a restrictor tube. The restrictor tube has a first open end located inside the pressure vessel and an opposite second open end located outside the pressure vessel. The restrictor tube has a small diameter so as to restrict the flow of gas therethrough and out of the pressure vessel. The pressure vessel is connected to a supply of compressed gas via a valve. When a volume of gas is transferred to the vessel, the gas enters the first opening, travels through the restrictor tube and out of the second opening to provide a slow continuous release of gas. In one embodiment, the pressure vessel is incorporated in an insect trap.

Abstract: A device for attracting and capturing or otherwise disabling insects includes a fan mechanism structured and arranged to provide an outflow of air out of the device to atmosphere, and to draw an inflow directed counter the outflow from atmosphere into the device, the outflow being substantially within the inflow outside of the device. The flow mechanism is also structured and arranged to provide an insect attractant in the outflow. The device can include mounting structure being adapted to position the device with the outflow directed in a substantially downward direction. The outflow attracts insects to the vicinity of the device, and the inflow urges the insects to enter the device. An insect disabling structure is arranged with the flow mechanism to capture or otherwise disable insects being urged into the device by the inflow.

The hollow interior and a mouth of a bottle together define a zigzag passage when the bug-trapping cap is mounted to the mouth of the bottle such that the mouth of the bottle is not sealed by the bug-trapping cap. The zigzag passage has a downwardly facing opening to allow entrance of bugs and to prevent entrance of rain.

Abstract: A trap for insects, primarily the Japanese beetle, which is supported on the surface of a body of water by a floating support, the support having an aperture which holds an upright, elongated tube. A funnel is fitted into the top end of the tube, and a scent-based means for luring insects into the funnel is supported by the upwardly facing entrance opening of the funnel. The insects are attracted to the scent-based means and fall through the funnel, tube, and aperture, onto the surface of water below the trap. The trap may be held upright by a means, such as a pipe anchored to the ground, the trap being vertically slidingly coupled to the means for holding the trap upright.

  • Patent number: 6298597
Abstract: A termite control system kit. A several step process starts with taking a tube with a removal cap at one end, such as a two to four inch PVC tube, and filling the inner chamber with a food source such as rolled cardboard. The tube is then placed with its open end adjacent to a termite population so that live termites can then enter the entrance/exit of the tube to reach the food source. Once termites are inside the tube, the cap is removed from the tube, and a non-edible foraging matrix, such as a disc of loose soil and or sand that is treated with a slow acting and non-repellant toxicant, is placed between the food source in the chamber and the termite entrance/exit of the chamber. Slow acting and non-repellent toxicants can be non-immediate lethal doses of fipronil, chlorfenapyr, imidacloprid, and chlorpyrifos.

  • Patent number: 6272790
Abstract: A method and delivery system for an area-specific precision control of biting insects, including flying and non-flying, biting arthropods, is described. CO2 is metered through a tubing fence and dispensed into the center of traps that serve as visual targets for flying or walking biting arthropods. The outside membrane of a trap can be treated with mineral oil to capture and kill small arthropods such as sand flies of the genus Culicoides, or black flies of the genus Simulium. In addition, the membrane can be treated with insecticide formulations of Permethrin, Resmethrin, or Deltamethrin, to kill larger biting arthropods, such as ticks, mosquitoes, deer flies, horse flies, or stable flies. This method for biting arthropod control is an ecological-friendly alternative to the widespread broadcast application of organophosphate insecticides such as Derspan, Diprom, and Malthion.

Abstract: A trap for attracting and killing insects utilizing carbon dioxide as the attractant. The carbon dioxide is either generated, or dispersed directly into, a trapping media. This supply of carbon dioxide bubbles through the trapping media to the surface where it diffuses into the atmosphere. Subsequently, the insects are attracted directly to the trapping media, the site of the attractant's emission, where the insect subsequently lands. The trapping media then effectuates the demise of the insect by drowning the insect or by permanently affixing the insect to the trapping media.
