Abstract: A torch and mounting system therefor has a cylindrical main glass tube surrounded by a tough and rigid tube. The metallic tube is threaded at each end for receiving compression nuts, each having a ferrule such as an O-ring or a tapered ring inside. Each ferrule is a slip fit over the main glass tube and has an angled surface that butts against the end of the metallic tube. When the nuts are tightened, the sloped surfaces of the ferrules force the ferrules against the main glass tube, thereby fixing it in place within the metal tube. The metal tube in turn is clamped by a mounting clamp which is, in turn, mounted to an adjustment stage for optimum positioning of the torch. A support rail has adjustably mounted thereon one or more strain relieving clamps for holding gas or vapor delivery tubes in place to insure proper delivery of gases and vapors to the torch.

Abstract: A piezoelectric lighter with a child resistant ignition mechanism which prevents accidental ignition and ignition by unintended users and by minor children under the age of 5 years. The safety ignition mechanism is an activation device that requires two displacements in order to ignite the lighter. The displacements are achieved by applying a continuous and increasing force to the activating component in order to ignite the lighter. The first displacement unlocks the ignition device and the second displacement initiates simultaneously an electrical discharge and a fuel discharge, which results in a flame. Whenever a user discontinues the application of force to the activating component, the ignition mechanism returns to an inoperable, locked position. The effectiveness of this activating device in resisting the manipulations of children under the age of 5 years has been established by tests performed pursuant to the requirements of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Abstract: A two-stage safety arrangement for a cigarette lighter of the piezoelectric type having a case that houses a flammable liquid container, gas release mechanism, and piezoelectric ignition element. The safety arrangement includes an ignition cover that covers the gas release mechanism, a striking lever, and a release button. To operate the lighter, a user must first depress the release button and use an upward movement to release the ignition cover and reveal the gas release mechanism. Next, the user must simultaneously depress the release button and push the striking lever rotatably downwards and away from the gas release mechanism in order to actuate the piezoelectric ignition element. Use of both hands to depress the release button and pry back the striking lever from above, near the gas release mechanism, is further prevented by providing a raised safety ridge to prevent a user from gripping the edge of the striking lever near the outlet of the gas release mechanism.

The lighter having a lighting mechanism activatable by a single movement of an operator's finger, which finger has a resistance to deformation. The lighting mechanism includes a first actuator movable between a first position and a second position, and a second actuator movable between a third position and a fourth position. The actuators are arranged so that when the first actuator is moved by the single finger movement from the first position to the second position the finger also moves the second actuator from the third position to the fourth position. The relative position is variable according to the fingers resistance to deformation and the lighter reaches the state of ignition only for certain preset values of the relative position.
