Abstract: A relighter apparatus for operating a pilot burner for a fuel pipeline heater. The relighter apparatus has a controller located at a first location, and a pilot burner assembly and ignition coil located at a second location which is remotely located a distance from the first location. The ignition coil is also electrically connected to the controller. The ignition coil receives a low voltage input based on a signal from the controller and provides a high voltage output at the output thereof. Current corresponding to the high voltage output is transferred from the ignitor coil, through a terminal and to an ignitor rod. A conduction of the electrical current between the second end of the ignitor rod and the pilot burner assembly causes an adequate spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the pilot burner assembly, creating a pilot flame.

Abstract: An apparatus which can confine almost entire available energy in the vicinity of ignition point during a laser-induced ignition process is proposed. Multiple reflection by a cavity surface when a small diameter laser beam is directed into the cavity is utilized in laser ignition. Shadowgraphs of the early stages of the combustion process for quiescent methane/air mixtures show that a hot gas jet emerges from the cavity. During subsequent flame propagation, both similarities with and difference from conventional spark ignition processes are observed, depending on the cavity size and the concentration of mixtures. With laser cavity ignition, the chamber pressure increases relatively rapidly and higher maximum pressure can be achieved. As a result, the combustion duration for laser cavity ignition is decreased relative to laser-induced spark ignition.

Abstract: A premix burner assembly for heating the combustion chamber of a dryer for an HMA plant, soil remediation plant, or the like is designed to meet the very low emission limitations that are imposed in certain areas such as the southern portion of California. The burner assembly includes a burner, a primary nozzle, an air source connected to the burner, a fuel source, and a fuel injection system connected to the fuel source and to the burner. Premixing is achieved through the supply of a gaseous fuel from the fuel injection system into the burner upstream of the primary nozzle so as to lead to nearly complete premixing of the air and fuel prior to discharge into the combustion chamber, thereby permitting combustion of the fuel with only very small amounts of excess air. Burner efficiency is increased and emissions are further reduced by employing air distribution and control devices upstream of the fuel injection system and by carefully controlling the supply of both air and fuel to the burner.

Abstract: An ignition device for burners in which an ignition spark is established over a nonconducting surface between a hot electrode and a grounded electrode or electrically conductor portion which enables a greater spark distance to be obtained as compared to an ignition spark which jumps across an air gap between two conducting electrodes. An additional feature of the present invention is the provision of a high limit control positioned proximal the burner such that flame resulting from heater inlet blockage will flash upstream into the vicinity of the high limit control to control operation of the burner.

The wheel is urged towards said first position when being actuated to rotate in said first direction and to pass to said second position, said wheel should first be rotated in a direction opposite to said first direction. Preferably the positions of the spark wheel are associated with the positions of the end stubs of the shaft thereof in some housings.

Abstract: A cutting torch allows the preheat oxygen and fuel valves to remain in a preset position while the torch is off. The cutting torch has preheat oxygen and fuel cutoff valves mounted in line with the adjusting valves. The cutoff valves are both operated linearly, each having an axially moving plunger. An actuator simultaneously moves the cutoff valves between opened and closed positions. The actuator has a locking device to lock them in the opened and closed positions. A pilot flame igniter utilizes a piezoelectric crystal and a pilot fuel valve positioned side by side with parallel axes. An igniter actuator in a single stroke opens the pilot fuel valve and causes an electrical spark to ignite the pilot flame.

  • Patent number: 5468144
Abstract: Disclosed is a gas lighter. To use the gas lighter, first, the push-down member is depressed. As a result, the rotary body rotates and the engage pawl of the rotary body engages with the ratchet teeth of the ratchet. This rotates the ratchet, causing the rotary ignition means to rotate. As the rotary ignition means rotates, it rubs against the flint to make sparks, which ignite the gas injected from the gas injection means. To stop using the gas lighter, the depression of the push-down member should be released. Consequently, the push-down member returns by the returning elastic member so that the rotary body rotates in the opposite direction, thus disengaging the engage pawl from the ratchet teeth. At this time, the ratchet teeth and rotary ignition means do not rotate.
