  • Publication number: 20110306160
Abstract: Multi-zone, solar cell diffusion furnaces having a plurality of radiant element (SiC) or/and high intensity IR lamp heated process zones, including baffle, ramp-up, firing, soaking and cooling zone(s). The transport of solar cell wafers, e.g., silicon, selenium, germanium or gallium-based solar cell wafers, through the furnace is implemented by use of an ultra low-mass, wafer transport system comprising laterally spaced shielded metal bands or chains carrying non-rotating alumina tubes suspended on wires between them. The wafers rest on raised circumferential standoffs spaced laterally along the alumina tubes, which reduces contamination. The bands or chains are driven synchronously at ultra-low tension by a pin drive roller or sprocket at either the inlet or outlet end of the furnace, with appropriate tensioning systems disposed in the return path. The high intensity IR flux rapidly photo-radiation conditions the wafers so that diffusion occurs >3× faster than conventional high-mass thermal furnaces.

  • Patent number: 5857847
Abstract: A method of controlling the feeding of part trays into a roller-hearth brazing furnace includes feeding a part tray into the furnace after the expiration of a time period. The temperatures in each heating zone of the furnace are monitored. After the expiration of the time period and before a part tray is fed into the furnace, these temperatures are compared to a specified temperature range for each zone. If all temperatures within the heating zones are within specification, the time period is decremented by a small amount. This process continues automatically until a temperature in a heating zone is not within specification when the time period expires. When this occurs, the time period is incremented by a small amount, which can be different from or the same as the amount used to decrement the time period.

  • Patent number: 5677197
Abstract: An assay system for detecting the binding of a mobile reactant to an immobilized reactant on an assay plate. The assay plate includes a substrate having an assay spot deposited thereon. The assay spot includes the immobilized reactant. In the present invention, a carrier dye is included in the assay spot, the amount of the carrier dye indicating the amount of the immobilized reactant that is present in the assay spot. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the assay spot is generated by depositing liquid on the assay plate at a location corresponding to the assay spot. The carrier dye is dissolved in the liquid and remains after the liquid evaporates. The amount of carrier dye in each spot may be measured spectroscopically and provides a means for identifying defective assay plates.

  • Patent number: 5129161
Abstract: An apparatus, e.g., a screen printing machine or dryer, having a light fixture wherein one or more cover plates shuttle between an open position in which light may bathe and dry a nearby object and a closed position in which the light is blocked. As an article passes under a lamp mounted onto the fixture the cover plates slide open, and as the dried article departs, the plates slide shut. This apparatus is especially suited for use in conjunction with an ultraviolet lamp, to prevent the escape of UV light into the work environment.

  • Patent number: 4656756
Abstract: For a method for heat-treating textile material, and for a tenter for carrying out the method, it is proposed to control the textile web velocity as a function of the point on the treatment path at which the maximum deviation in the amount of energy spent per unit time occurs. To determine this point on the treatment path it is not necessary, therefore, to measure the momentary temperature of the textile material directly or the temperatures of the treatment medium flowing in and out. Instead, it suffices to determine the individual valve positions which indicate the amounts of energy supplied per unit time, and to infer therefrom the site of the treatment path where the drying process is completed and the fixing process sets in.

  • Patent number: 4498864
Abstract: A flame intensity controller for controlling the air/gas mixture introduced into a conveying and/or mixing tube. Plural heating arrays are transversely aligned to the direction of movement to dry the moving web. The controller selectively controls the heating intensity of each section of the heating arrays to thereby control the amount of drying experienced by each longitudinal section of the web. The controller may be a countercurrent air controller or a mechanical restrictor. The energy output of each section is controlled between adjustable upper and lower energy levels. However, the lower energy level is chosen to be sufficient to sustain combustion. The independent control of the dryer sections provides dramatic improvement in uniformity of the moisture "profile" across the web.

  • Patent number: 4395232
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus useful in controlling the operation of ovens of the type typically associated with baking food products. Broadly, the apparatus permits the linear display of heat input to one or more zones of an oven responsive to gas flow. Heat input is indicated by fluid levels in manometers having their legs dimensioned to permit linear display of heat input despite the variance of gas flow with the square of the pressure. The manometers are positioned next to an adjustable scale which accommodates combustible gases of varying heat contents. The adjustable scale is preferably marked for the preferred heat input profile across the various zones of the oven to facilitate control of optimum heat input to the oven as a whole. Also disclosed are similar display devices for exhaust gases.
