Patent number: 5785525Abstract: An implant body has a non-round cross sectional shape, for example, ovoidal or rectangular. Lateral surfaces of the implant include threaded portions of a circular cylinder such that the implant, although non-round in cross section, can threadably engage a tapped circular opening in the jawbone leaving lateral spaces. Bone grows into the spaces between implant and the jawbone socket. The implant is shaped similarly to the root structure of a natural tooth and can be oriented, about its longitudinal axis, at any angle relative to the general curvature of the jawbone where the implant is seated. A more natural appearance of the mouth is achieved; prosthetic teeth may be positioned closer together without loss of strength between the implant and the jawbone. A non-round cross section of an implant opening receives an abutment post of corresponding cross section to prevent rotation of the abutment relative to the implant. A cemented connection prevents axial displacement between the abutment and implant.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1996Date of Patent: July 28, 1998Inventor: Bernard Weissman

Patent number: 5601429Abstract: An anchor for a dental implant, having a compact cavity for receiving the post of a post and core, and a tapered threaded end having tapered, self-tapping threads. The cavity is configured to have flat walls forming a hexagonal or other polygonal interior surface. This interior surface also has screw threads superimposed on the polygonal surface. The anchor is thus of reduced axial length than prior art anchors having threads and polygonal surfaces not superimposed. The tapered threads formed on the tapered threaded end engage different areas of bone tissue. Since bone tissue may not be homogeneously strong and resilient, this arrangement helps assure that some threads will engage strong, resilient bone tissue. This threading preferably comprises buttress type threads. A pitched relief groove extends across all convolutions of the external, self-tapping threads formed on the tapered end. These self-tapping threads are buttress threads.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1995Date of Patent: February 11, 1997Inventor: Gordon D. Blacklock

Patent number: 4560353Abstract: Implants made of corrosion resistant metals such as titanium, tantalum or niobium, wherein the parts to be inserted into the jaw bone have an essentially leaf-shaped form, and the parts projecting from the jaw bone right through into the mouth cavity being a crown, bridge or some other superstructure, have the problem that such implants have frequently been surrounded by a soft tissue fringe as a result of which the implants are merely loosely anchored in the jaw bone. This also causes an irritation of mucous membrane in the region of the implant part extending through the mucous membrane, as a result of which the implant's bacteria-tight closure is no longer present in many instances. There is an annular groove on the outside of the ring. In order to hold the implant during the healing-in phase with a certainty of freedom from any load, the elements of the superstructure are attached to the post penetrating the mucous membrane by means of a blind hole.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1983Date of Patent: December 24, 1985Assignee: Friedrichsfeld GmbH - Steinzeug- und KunststoffwerkeInventors: Willi Schulte, Gunther Heimke

Patent number: 4531917Abstract: An oral implant for supporting an artificial tooth structure includes an implant portion which is buried in the bone of the patient along the occlusal plane. A neck portion extends from the side of the implant portion remote from the groove and receives a post portion on which the artificial tooth structure is cemented. Means are provided on the neck portion so as to cause it to become wedged within a cavity of the overlying post portion, thereby releasably locking the post to the neck portion. As a result of this arrangement, a bridge structure can be removed from an implant without having to destroy the bridge.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1984Date of Patent: July 30, 1985Inventors: Leonard I. Patent number: 4486178Abstract: The invention provides a implants made of metal for the purpose of anchoring superstructures consisting of one or more crowns or parts of crowns, also made of metal, arranged in the form of bridges. In general, various metals are used for the implant and the individual parts of the superstructure. In most of the implant systems presently in use, these different metal parts are in direct, electrically conductive contact. Consequently, the possibility of the formation of galvanic cells results. The electrical voltages coming into being as a result of such can lead to the flowing of electric currents through the tissue and the body fluid that is present. Such electrical currents, in turn, can have an unfavorable influence on the tissue reactions at the point where the surface is in contact with the implant, and consequently can result in the premature loosening and loss of the implant.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1983Date of Patent: December 4, 1984Assignee: Friedrichsfeld GmbH Steinzeug-und KunststoffwerkeInventor: Willi Schulte
