Abstract: The display system for a cockpit of an aircraft comprises a transparent display device and a display computer. The transparent display device includes a brightness masking device that can be commanded according to at least three predetermined levels of opacity in at least four masking independent zones. The display system includes a brightness sensor. The display computer is configured to determine a level of brightness due to the light source, in display zones corresponding to each of the masking zones, depending on information coming from the brightness sensor; determine an opacity level associated with each of the masking zones, depending on the brightness level determined, such that a higher level of opacity corresponds to a higher level of brightness; and command the opacity level in each of the masking zones of the brightness masking device.

  • Patent number: 10249208
Abstract: A system and method for training a pilot to operate an aircraft in sudden-onset reduced-visibility conditions is disclosed. The system includes electrooptic material having an optical transmittance that varies with an electrical signal applied to the material and a power supply to provide the electrical signal to the material. The electrooptic material is disposed to restrict the pilot's visibility outside the aircraft when the electrooptic material is in a low-optical-transmittance state. The system further includes a flight-safety sensor that sets the output of the power supply to correspond to an optical transmittance state of the electrooptic material that does not substantially restrict the pilot's visibility outside the aircraft when flight conditions are deemed unsafe. The method includes reducing the optical transmittance of the material to restrict the pilot's visibility outside the aircraft in a manner unexpected to the pilot at the time of the transmittance reduction.

  • Patent number: 9269132
Abstract: A method and a display system for dynamically activating a night-vision mode. The display system comprises a processor module that further comprises an image generator module. The processor module is for determining at least a head position of a user in the display system, the head position being used at least for geometry-correction purposes and, while determining the head position, determining that a night-vision-enhancer device is activated by the user. The processor module is further for activating the night-vision mode of the display system and the image generator module, upon activation of the night-vision mode of the display system, renders night-vision-enhanced images of a computer generated environment for display. The night-vision-enhanced images present a night-mode-adapted wavelength spectrum.

  • Patent number: 8573977
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and flight simulators are disclosed to present infrared images detectable by night vision devices. A video signal may be received. The video signal may be configured to generate a viewable image substantially within a human visible spectrum. The video signal may include one or more of a red component, a green component, and a blue component. The video signal also may be configured to generate one or more infrared images. The one or more infrared images may be substantially outside the human visible spectrum and may have an infrared component detectable by a night vision device. In response to the video signal, the red and green components may be separately modulated to generate red and green portions of the viewable image. The blue component and the infrared component may be collectively modulated to generate a blue portion of the viewable image and the one or more infrared images.

  • Patent number: 8368721
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for simulating United States football and other sports that are held on a playing field. The user stands in an area that at least approximates an actual playing field, and an apparatus incorporated into a football helmet or other headgear worn by the user superimposes simulation images onto the field of view of the user, creating an illusion of simulated action taking place on the actual field where the user is standing. This makes the information and skills conveyed by the simulation directly relevant and immediately useful. Preferred embodiments track the location and orientation of the user and thereby allow the user to participate in the simulation. In another aspect, essentially the same apparatus and method are used to simulate driving or flying of vehicles without the need of an expensive mockup of the interior of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 8234231
Abstract: A system and method solicit decision-making input from a large number of users in a structured manner that facilitates generation of useful recommendations. The individual seeking advice posts a request for advice in the form of a decision question, or identifies a previously posted decision question. Visitors to the website can post secondary questions that are intended to assist the advice-seeker in making the decision. For each secondary question, the user posting the question can specify which choice for the decision question is recommended by each answer to the secondary question. The user can also specify a strength for the recommendation. The advice-seeker then inputs answers to the secondary questions. The advice-seeker can indicate a relative significance value for some or all of the answers. For each secondary answer, a score is generated. Scores are totaled and the results are provided to the advice-seeker to assist in decision-making.

Abstract: The night vision goggle training apparatus simulates the size, feel and handling of actual night vision goggles. A narrow band-width green filter is positioned over the viewing port, to simulate nighttime viewing conditions. The image intensification system used in night vision goggles is eliminated; limiting use of the training goggles to daytime use. The out of balance weight of the night vision goggles is identical to actual night vision goggles. Brightness control is simulated by attenuation filters that fit over the objective lens. The blooming effect of lights is simulated with a star filter. A thin, fine mesh screen is used to simulate reduced acuity, scintillation and ghosting effects during low light or rapid motion, which occur during use of actual night vision goggles. The objective focus and diopter adjustment are identical to night vision goggles.

  • Patent number: 6687910
Abstract: A translucent shield (20) is provided for covering a self contained breathing apparatus mask faceplate (22) to simulate smoke. The shield consists of a die cut shape of thermoplastic sheet that duplicates the outline of the self contained breathing apparatus mask faceplate. The translucent shield has a light penetration density concentration simulating smoke in various grades or densities replicating, at the least, limited visibility, intermediate visibility and total engulfment. In order to preclude light penetration, the shape of the shield includes a peripheral overlap (32) onto the mask. A method of removably attaching the shield to the self contained breathing apparatus face mask is provided by the use of pressure sensitive tape (36) or hooks and loop tape (38). The invention simulates smoke which visually limits light transmission to a person wearing an apparatus face mask during training exercise procedures for firefighters.

  • Patent number: 6389415
Abstract: In a distributed method of data gathering, connotative meanings of terms are selected from predefined emotional descriptors organized into a plurality of emotional categories. Respective judges select zero or one emotional descriptors from a given category and rate the term for intensity. Each term is evaluated by a plurality of judges for each emotional category. The results are processed to assure that the selected emotional descriptors were not selected by chance. Anomalous results are purged. Statistical analysis is performed to assure that the selected emotional descriptors were not selected by chance. Retained associations become part of the database for the corresponding record. There may be 0, 1 or more connotative associations for any given record. The completed data base is accessed through a computer interface to implement an electronic language reference tool.

Abstract: Firefighter training device for limiting a trainee's vision and simulating firefighting conditions across a trainee's field of view. The device includes a view-limiting simulation mask which is worn by a trainee (e.g., respirator mask, glasses, or goggles). The mask houses a voltage controlled liquid crystal (LC) lens system, either single or multi-layered, which is divided into various individually and electronically controllable segments. Host dyes might be injected into LC materials to produce colors in the lens segments. Pre-programmed and random pattern control of lens segments occludes the trainee's vision and simulates smoke and/or fires. Sound and strobes might be added to simulate explosions and other firefighting conditions. A transmitter, which includes switchable controls, can be used to send control signals to the mask. The training device can effectively be used indoors or outdoors.
