Abstract: A method for degrading an undesirable ether-based environmental contaminant by contacting the ether with a hydrogen-oxidizing microorganism to convert the ether to innocuous compounds which are environmentally acceptable, including treating the ether-based contaminants in situ or removing them from the contaminated site for treatment in a bioreactor, examples of the ether-based contaminants being tertiary butyl ethers of the type utilized as gasoline oxygenates, for example, methyl tert-butyl ether, ethyl tert-butyl ether, and methyl tert-amyl ether, and also ether solvents, for example, tetrahydrofuran.

  • Patent number: 6492149
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of improving the yield of a photobioreactor of the continuously operating recirculation type as a function of the species of micro-organism being cultured, of the thickness d of the chambers (10) of the reactor, and of the final concentration desired for the culture. In the method, transparent or respecting particles (15) are introduced into the reaction medium (11), which particles are of a density that is substantially equal to that of the reaction medium, thereby adjusting absorbance of the microorganism culture to optimum levels. The invention is mainly applicable to culturing phototropic micro-organisms.

Abstract: In the micro organism cultivation device of this invention, an implantable bio-artificial micro device, i.e., a cell apartment, is provided to cultivate cells or tissues. The cells or tissues to be cultivated include that secrete hormones such as islets of Langerhans. At both sides of the cell apartment, provided are microfluidic channels comprising dynamic micro-electric field array filters. The dynamic micro-electric field array filters comprise a plurality of electrodes distributed inside the microchannels. By periodically switching the polarity of the electrodes, microfluidic flows are generated in the microchannels. All inlet flows to the cell apartment are filtered by the immunoisolation of the micro-electric field array filters before entering into the cell apartment. The micro-electric field array filters provide a physical immune protection to the cells cultivated in the cell apartment against the immune system of the host.
