Abstract: An electrical connector for interconnecting a portable radio and accessory devices. The connector attached to the accessory device includes a slot for initially engaging a tab on the portable radio, which provides proper alignment between the portable radio and the connector, while the connector is rotated toward the portable radio. Maintaining alignment ensures proper mating between the electrical contacts of the portable radio and the electrical contacts of the connector, and further ensures that a quarter turn latching device of the connector is properly received by a receiving member on the portable radio. The user then rotates the quarter turn latching device to urge the contacts against each other and secure the connector in place. Because the electrical connector includes a two-point attachment mechanism to the portable radio, rotation of the connector relative to the portable radio is prevented.

Abstract: An articulable projecting plug is disclosed that provides for interchangeable mechanical connection between one of several electronic-signal ports such as video-signal ports, and housing/support structure associated with an electronic device such as a flat-screen television. The plug also accommodates video communication between a video-signal source and such television. The plug includes joining structure constructed to bring the plug into contact with the port and hold them both in such joined relationship. The joining structure includes an outer surface and holder structure for holding the first end of an elongate conductor so that joinder of the plug with the port will also result in contact between such first end and the port. The plug also includes an elongate projecting member terminating with first and second ends, with the first end being operatively connected to the joining structure so that the projecting elongate member extends from it and away from the port.

Abstract: A rotary electrical connector has two planar connector members. Each of the planar connector members is positioned perpendicular to an axis of rotation and is supported in rotational facing relation to the other connector member. One of the connector members has a set of concentric tracts thereon, and the other has a corresponding set of protrusions positioned to contact the tracks. A spring forces the two connector members into contact so that electrical contact is maintained between the protrusions and the tracks as one connector member rotates relative to the other connector member. External electrical contact is made on one side to the tracks, and on the other side to the protrusions.

Abstract: A rotatable electrical connector or swivel is used in a substantially vertical subterranean portion of a drill string within a drill pipe. The swivel has an enclosed oil filled chamber having a first shaft concentrically mounted therein. The first shaft protrudes from the chamber and is electrically connected to one end of a wireline which is used for electrical connection between the surface and instruments located downhole. Within the interior of the oil filled chamber the first shaft is attached to a first member disposed within the complementary surface of a second member concentrically aligned with the first member. The second member includes a second shaft which protrudes from the oil filled chamber and is connected to the other end of the wireline. One of the two shafts is rotatably mounted in bearing within the chamber so that the complementary surfaces of the first and second members are in the relationship of a rotor and stator.

  • Patent number: 5454724
Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing a controlled resistance electrical path from one moving element of an electrical device to second or subsequent element. An electrically conductive media is introduced between the rotating and static element of an electrical device. The media, e.g. conductive grease, may be introduced into the bearings of the device. Alternatively, a housing may be disposed upon one of the elements. Into this housing is introduced a quantity of electrically conductive media and a contact element. The contact element is integral with, or is preloaded against, one end of the shaft of the second element, thereby forming an electrical path from the shaft, through the media to the housing and thence to the first element of the device. The contact element may be seen therefore to be floating in contact with the conductive media, thereby forming a controlled-resistance rotary electrical connector.

  • Patent number: 5352122
Abstract: An electrical connector is formed from two pairs of contacts. One pair of contacts is rotatable with respect to the other pair of contacts. Both pairs are in conductive and frictional engagement throughout a 90 degree rotational distance. One pair of contacts have an arcuate conductive contact surface, each contact being symmetrically arranged with respect to the axis of rotation, in opposed relation to one another and separated at each end by a non-conductive space. One pair of contacts are attached to a pair of male electrical prongs. The other pair of contacts are attached to an electrical appliance. The one pair of contacts and the attached pair of male electrical prongs are themselves attached to a nonconductive disk. The nonconductive disk is disposed in a circular groove in a disk holder. The nonconductive disk and the pair of contacts and electrical prongs attached thereto are rotatable within the circular groove. Stops are employed to limit the rotational distance to 90 degree.
