    Abstract: A process for making an absorbent material involves flash-drying a superabsorbent polymer precursor composition. The synthesis (i.e., polymerization) of the superabsorbent is completely integrated into the process for forming the absorbent material. One or more streams of superabsorbent polymer precursor composition are provided, to which a plurality of individual fibers may be added. The resulting in-situ polymerized superabsorbent-fiber material is then flash-dried and can subsequently be formed into a superabsorbent-fiber composite. The flash-drying is relatively inexpensive and requires little drying time compared to conventional drying methods.

    Abstract: Lightweight, non-woven loop products for hook-and-loop fastening are disclosed, as are methods for making them and end products employing them. The products are non-woven webs of entangled fibers of substantial tenacity, the fibers forming both a sheet-form web body and hook-engageable, free-standing loops extending from the web body. The product is stretched and stabilized to produce spaced-apart loop clusters extending from a very thin web of taut fibers. In important cases a binder is added to stabilize the product in its stretched condition. An example of the loop product is produced by needle-punching a batt of staple fibers in multiple needle-punching operations, applying a foamed acrylic binder, and then stretching the needled batt and curing the binder with the batt stretched. Other forming techniques are disclosed and several novel articles and uses employing such loop products are described, such as for filters and fasteners.

    Abstract: A process for treating high-loft porous fabrics with topically applied active agents is provided and includes the steps of applying an active agent to a surface of the fabric and forcing the active agent through the entirety of the web by directing a focused stream of air or steam, at a rate above 25 meters/second, into and through the web and also applying a vacuum to the opposite side of the web to collect the air, condensate and/or active agent drawn out of the fabric. Fabrics having a thickness in excess of 50 mils with densities between 0.2 g/cc and 0.008 g/cc have a topically applied active agent substantially uniformly distributed throughout the entire fabric thickness.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to crimped and resilient polymeric fibers and to fabrics and laminates made from the fibers. In general, the fibers are produced by crimping a polymeric fiber and then cross-linking a polymer and/or monomer contained within the fiber. Cross-linking the polymer makes the crimp contained with the fiber more permanent and more resilient. When formed into a nonwoven web, the fibers produce high loft fabrics which are resilient to compressive forces. Nonwoven webs made in accordance with the present invention are particularly well suited for use in filter products and liquid absorbent products.

    Abstract: Spunbond multicomponent filaments and nonwoven webs made from the filaments are disclosed. In accordance with the present invention, the multicomponent filaments contain a crimp enhancement additive. Specifically, the crimp enhancement additive is added to the polymeric component that has the slower solidification rate. The additive enhances crimp, allows for highly crimped filaments to be made at low fiber linear densities, improves the integrity of unbonded webs made from the filaments, and produces webs with improved stretch and cloth-like properties.
