  • Patent number: 6712680
Abstract: A bifurcated hose junction is provided for a pole mounted abrading device with vacuum assisted particulate removal. The junction is actuated by the movement of the sanding pad assembly. When a. short side of the rectangular sanding pad assembly is moved toward the tubular handle, the bifurcated hose junction is displaced laterally in relation to the linear axis of the handle. When a long side of the sanding pad assembly is moved toward the tubular handle, the bifurcated hose junction rotates in place, thereby allowing the sanding pad a comprehensive range of motion, in relation to the handle. The range of motion enables the operator to close the angle between sanding pad and the handle, and maintain planar contact between the sanding screen and the work surface, when working in constricted areas.

  • Patent number: 6485360
Abstract: The orbital sander of the present invention eliminates many of the disadvantages of the prior art sanders by providing a compact, lightweight, and economical sander having a body and shroud formed from an injection-molded synthetic polymeric material. The head is replaced using a built-in plunger which engages notches in the spindle, without the need for tools. The built-in plunger enables the flexible shroud of the prior art to be replaced with a rigid polymeric shroud positioned with a minimal gap between the shroud and the head or shoe. The polymeric shroud is attached to the rest of the polymeric body structure by three screws and two pins. The pins project upwardly from the polymeric shroud and into precise engagement with the polymeric body structure, thus reducing the required drilling and tapping, providing rotational stability, and increasing the strength of the connection between the two parts.

  • Patent number: 5885145
Abstract: A powered drywall sander and painter has a proximally located variable speed motor and a motor housing connected to a hollow lower handle. An upper handle telescopes into the interior of the lower handle. The motor rotates a drive shaft within the handles. The upper handle is fastened to an anti-rotation spring with an adjustable sleeve clamp. The upper end of the spring is clamped to a bottom slide to prevent rotational movement therebetween. A top slide having a sanding pad slidably engages the bottom slide. The rotation of the drive shaft is converted to lateral motion of the sanding pad at a distal end of the drive shaft. The sanding pad is free to swivel. The sanding attachment may be interchangeably replaced with a painting attachment. The painting attachment has a paint brush pad with bristles and a paint cup with a centrally located aperture which delivers paint to the paint cup. The painting attachment converts the rotational motion of the drive shaft into rotational motion of the paint brush pad.

  • Patent number: 5833014
Abstract: About a rigid longitudinal extension a sleeve is frictionally suspended such that the extension may reciprocate freely within the sleeve while remaining relatively stationary longitudinally. The rear end of the extension is attachable to a reciprocating portable power tool and the forward end is attached to a tool head. In operation, the extension and the tool head reciprocate while the sleeve, grasped in one hand, is frictionally isolated from the reciprocation and consequently insulated from the vibration associated with the operation of a portable reciprocating portable power tool. A coupling upon the forward end of the extension facilitates the attachment of a variety of different tool ends. Frictional suspension of the sleeve about the extension by using a pair of springs or by using bearings between the sleeve and the extension is suggested.

  • Patent number: 5775979
Abstract: An enclosed abrasive blasting apparatus for a ship hull or other working surface comprises a movable and adjustable boom and an enclosed operator containment mounted on the end of the boom. The containment has a top, sides, back, bottom, and an adjustable angle open front with a peripheral gum rubber seal that is placed against the working surface. The outlet nozzle for the abrasive blasting system is positioned within the containment where the operator directs the abrasive stream against the working surface. A waste collection system creates a negative pressure in the containment that seals the containment against the working surface, while at the same time directing an airflow stream from an inlet in the top of the containment downwardly across the working surface, entraining waste particles proximate to the working surface into the airflow stream, and further directs the waste particles to a sealed collection container below the enclosure.

Abstract: A decontaminating apparatus for removing a layer of contaminated material, such as radioactively contaminated concrete, includes two material removing devices which are driven, alternately, towards and away from one another. Each material removing device includes two rotatable scabbling drums enclosed in a shroud from which removed material is conveyed to a waste collection skip. The material removing devices are mounted at the free ends of two pivotable arms arranged to be driven in mutually opposite directions by a common drive mechanism. A frame supports the two material removing devices, the frame being connected to an articulated arm which extends from a remotely-operated vehicle. The vehicle is located on a platform which can be raised and lowered to facilitate access by the material removing devices to the entire surface under treatment.

  • Patent number: 5607343
Abstract: A vibration stabilizer is provided for a power tool such as a sander or the like which has a pivotally oscillating driveshaft for supporting a tool head. The tool is provided with an elongate body having an internal cavity aligned along a longitudinal axis for receiving a drive motor therein. A driveshaft is pivotally supported upon the elongate body rotatable about a pivot axis. The drive motor operatively engages the driveshaft to cause the driveshaft to pivotally oscillate within a limited angular range when the drive motor is energized. Relative vibration between the tool head and the elongate body is minimized by an elastic ring which extends about the driveshaft and is interposed between the tool head and the elongate body. The elastic ring is loaded in compression axially biasing the tool head and the attached driveshaft in a direction away from the elongate body.

  • Patent number: 5605500
Abstract: A vacuum attachment assembly is provided for use in combination with a corner sanding tool comprising a replaceable sander block of resilient foam material having a transverse cross section of the form of an isosceles triangle. The block is removably mounted on a carrier member which is inserted into a close-fitting chamber within the block body through a narrow entrance passage, the carrier being connected to a handle. The vacuum attachment comprises a C-shaped body having two parallel end portions extending from a central portion, and the sander block is of sufficient length that it must be compressed somewhat longitudinally for it to be inserted into the assembly, which is thereby frictionally retained under the resilience of the sander block body material. The attachment central portion has two parallel side walls which are butted by the resilient sander block to establish an air-tight, air-receiving plenum chamber between the attachment member and the sander block.

  • Patent number: 5540616
Abstract: A device that is intended as a snap on attachment for an existing pole-mounted sander. Snap-fit receiving elements are attached to the poleward side of the generally rectangular and planar abrasive receiving surface and the pole itself is slid through and retained against lateral movement by a central rigid collar. This then brings a substantially rigid mouth portion that is configured to extend about the periphery of the receiving surface, and that also carries upon it the protruding snap members, into a proximal relationship with the abrasive receiving surface whereby the mutually engageable snap members hold the present invention in place to form a continuous intake port. A flexible collar portion lies between the mouth portion and the rigid collar portion to allow for tilting of the abrasive surface during use, as is common on the pole mounted sanders currently in use.
