The method may also include moving the blade stock with respect to a second cutting element rotating about a second rotational axis, the second rotational axis forming one of an acute angle and a perpendicular angle with respect to the cutting edge, and contacting the edge portion and the second cutting element and forming a second cutting surface along the edge portion so that the second cutting surface intersects the first cutting surface to form the cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 6824449
Abstract: An apparatus for clamping a workpiece in a machine. The apparatus comprises an inner nose portion being rotatable about an axis of rotation and comprising a plurality of mounting surfaces, and, an outer ring portion rotatable about the axis of rotation and comprising at least one clamp operable between an unclamped position and a clamped position. In the unclamped position, the inner nose portion is rotationally positionable about the axis relative to the clamp such that a workpiece positioned against the mounting surfaces may be oriented relative to the clamp to a position at which with the clamp being operated to the clamped position, the workpiece is clamped against the mounting surfaces. The clamping results in a coupling of the inner nose portion and the outer ring portion whereby with a clamped workpiece, the inner nose portion and the outer ring portion are rotatable together and are positionable about the axis.

  • Patent number: 6168509
Abstract: A knife sharpener having a clamp system held by a frame in such a way that the knife to be sharpened may move in any direction freely but is otherwise held so that it does not rotate about any axis through the knife in order to maintain its orientation with respect to sharpening stones held by the frame. The knife can therefore be sharpened by moving it toward the user and down, first against one of two stones and then against the other, opposing stone, to sharpen both sides of the blade. The sharpener can be attached to a base or to the underside of cabinetry and may be used with various sharpening stones. In particular, a triangular, pivoting stone with rounded corners is preferred because it offers different facets and curves for use in sharpening flat-bladed and serrated knives and fully engages the knife blade through to the tip as the blade is drawn across its surface.

  • Patent number: 5462476
Abstract: The blade sharpening device is an adjustable multi-angle edge sharpening unit comprised of a base connected to a rotatable sharpening stone table and a vertically adjustable blade support table. A hand movable sharpening stone is positioned on the sharpening stone table and the blade to be sharpened positioned on the blade support table, with the blade in grinding contact with the sharpening stone. An angle selection chart on the base allows vertical movement of the blade support table in conjunction with rotational adjustment of the sharpening stone table to accurately select a specific angle at which the blade edge is ground. A scissors adapter unit may be attached to the blade support table which permits the sharpening of scissors blades. The scissors blade is pressed against the scissors adapter, the blade being in grinding contact with the sharpening stone in much the same manner as knife blades are sharpened by the device.
