An adjusting wheel rotatable attached to the handle shaft and pivotably coupled to the disc grinder provide a means for quickly and easily adjusting the cutting angle in order to accommodate sharpening the secondary cutting edges of a mulching style blade and returning the disc grinder back to its original cutting angle.

  • Patent number: 7896729
Abstract: A blade-sharpening machine for sharpening any one of various sizes of rotary blades comprises a drive unit and a universal blade chuck for holding the blade to be sharpened. The drive unit further includes a sharpening assembly that sharpens the blade while the drive unit rotates the blade chuck. The blade chuck includes a chassis and jaws that are circumferentially spaced about the chassis and are shiftably attached thereto for securing the rotary blade. A spring-loaded fastener normally urges the jaws radially inwardly into engagement with the blade. A centrally-positioned cam is operable to shift the jaws simultaneously so that the blade can be selectively secured on the blade chuck.

Abstract: A sharpener for creating cross-grind knife edges includes a nominally flat annular abrasive sharpening member which could be a ring or a disk and is rotated about its center and held against a moving knife edge facet to simultaneously and sequentially abrade the knife edge at multiple locations on the abrasive member. The disk may be slidably mounted on a shaft in opposition to a spring restraining force. The disk is nominally disposed in a vertical orientation. The sharpener may include multiple stages including a manual stage having a pair of off axis conical shaped rotatable abrasive coated disks which have abrading lines on opposing facets which are not parallel but cross and intersect in a crossing pattern at the blade edge.

Abstract: A sharpening guide assembly to be removably attached to a sharpening stone to provide for smooth, controlled and accurate motion when sharpening a blade is provided. The assembly includes a body portion forming a platform adapted to receive the sharpening tool. A magnet is disposed within a recess formed in the platform. The magnet aids in removably attaching the sharpening tool to the guide assembly. The body portion includes guide rails to stabilize and aid in the attachment of the sharpening tool to the guide assembly. A guide rod is affixed to the body portion. The sharpening guide assembly may be used with a sharpening tool including metal and having a substantially planar sharpening surface. A clamping device for holding a blade to be sharpened is slidably coupled to the guide rod of the assembly and is drawn back and forth along the guide rod for sharpening the blade.

  • Patent number: 7857681
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an automatic rotation knife sharpener where the crossed sharpening rods are automatically rotated each time a knife is passed down and through the sharpener. The rotation is derived through the means of a spring steel actuator mechanism making contact with the cogwheels of the sharpening rod holders. Magnets retain the sharpening rods in place within the sharpening rod holders. Sharpening rods may be easily removed and stored in troughs on the upper surface of the protective cover. A variety of sharpening rods with different abrasive surfaces can be easily exchanged in the device.
