  • Patent number: 6905403
Abstract: The invention relates to a knife sharpening machine comprising a plate-type holding device on which two intersecting sharpening bars are rotationally mounted and loaded in relation to each other by means of springs. The sharpening bars, at least in the grinding area, are made of a ceramic material. The plate is provided with a slit which is open on one end and closed on the other, extending as far as the intersection point of the sharpening bars. When pressure is exerted by the knife in the direction of the closed slit end, the sharpening bars are spread apart from each other counter to the force of the springs. Curved guides are provided on both sides of the slit. The ends of the sharpening bars, facing away from the axes of rotation thereof, are guided therein.

  • Patent number: 6743085
Abstract: A holder for an abrasive disc allows for a quick manual change of the abrasive disc. The holder including an uncoupling mechanism that in turn includes a handle comprising a pin and an adjacent hub comprising a partial annular channel. The handle and hub have a limited rotational engagement wherein the pin travels in the channel. When an operator desires to replace an abrasive disc, the operator grasps the handle with one hand and rotates the disc, face plate, and hub, together as a unit, with the other hand. This counter-rotation breaks the tight attachment of the disc on the shaft of the finishing tool, so that disc can be easily unthreaded from the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6129620
Abstract: Honing tools and methods of making such tools utilize a compact bundle of abrasive containing plastic monofilaments projection a relatively short distance from a holder with the compacted tips forming the working face of the tool. The bundle may be secured to the holder by a thin layer of adhesive or by a clinched or swaged girdling lip or rim on the holder which embraces the bundle. In addition, the bundle is further infused with an elastomer, preferably foamed. The bundle is enclosed in a mold which may be part of the clinching process and an elastomer is injected into the mold to infuse and encapsulate the bundle. The encapsulation fills the interstices of the bundle and form an integument around the bundle in effect making the tip action tool into a solid yet elastic block. This enables the abrasive monofilaments to have a higher abrasive loading since they are additionally supported by the matrix, and the tool to be applied at higher pressures.

  • Patent number: 5752876
Abstract: A flap disc for use with a rotary surface finishing tool, the flap disc includes a backing plate which attaches to and is rotated by the finishing tool. The backing plate has a mounting flange on which a plurality of abrasive flaps are radially disposed. The abrasive flaps are each adhesively attached to the mounting flange and positioned so as to overlap an adjacent flap. Each abrasive flap has a finishing layer which comprises abrasive particles intermixed in a resin binder. Attached to the finishing layer is a substrate which includes a resin binder. In one embodiment of the invention, the substrate is made from fiber material onto which the abrasive particle/resin mixture is adhesively attached. Alternately, the substrate may comprise a non-woven fibrous material onto which the abrasive particle/resin mixture is adhesively bonded. The mounting flange may comprise a plurality of fiberglass plies intermixed in a resin matrix.

  • Patent number: 5727995
Abstract: A surface preparation tool for peening and removing a coating from a work surface, the tool including a rotating hub which retains a plurality of peening flaps with peening particles attached at one end. The peening particles impact the work surface as the hub rotates and cause the coating to fragment and dislodge from the work surface. The tool includes a shroud assembly with a funnel-shaped evacuation port attached thereto. The shroud is positioned above the work surface such that a gap is formed which permits air to enter into the shroud. A sealing structure is affixed to the rear wall of the shroud to block air flow into the shroud below the funnel. When a vacuum is applied to the funnel, the narrow gap formed between the shroud and the work surface accelerates ambient air flow into the shroud while preventing dislodged particles from escaping. The rear wall seal prevents air from flowing into the shroud below the funnel which would oppose the direction of flow from the other three sides into the funnel.

  • Patent number: 5556328
Abstract: A honing tool characterized in one form by an elongated rectangular cup element or holder having a bottom interior surface, a bundle of closely packed relatively short discrete generally parallel abrasive containing filaments secured in the holder, and a layer of instant gel adhesive securing all of the filaments at one end face of the bundle to the bottom interior surface of the holder. To make such a honing tool, a measured bundle of uniformly closely packed nonwoven, generally parallel discrete filaments is formed. A holder is supported and a measured amount of gel adhesive is placed in the bottom interior of the holder so that a layer of such adhesive completely covers the bottom of the interior of the holder. The bundle is then promptly driven into the holder so that all of the filaments at one end of the bundle are in contact with the adhesive prior to the curing of the adhesive. The adhesive is then cured.
