  • Patent number: 5679056
Abstract: A drum sander attachment used with a rotary-driven power new or recycled container (50) as a dram secured to a shaft (54) with a drive means attached. The securing means having capability of sealing for purposes of producing a desired and/or firmness to the recycled container (50) drum. The vast assortment of recycled containers (50) available produce a variety of shapes and sizes for drum use allowing for abrading of both curved and flat surfaces. The design allows for repositioning of recycled container (50) on shaft (54) for a variety of configurations. The unit is constructed to be selectively portable or mounted in a stationary manner.

  • Patent number: 5662515
Abstract: A profiled, soft cushioned roller is provided with an outer profiled abrading surface that conforms to and rides on a contoured substrate surface during an abrading operation. A soft roller usually in the form of a soft foam layer or body allows the profiled abrading surface to extend to and laterally wrap itself along the contoured substrate surface when pushed against the latter with the force needed to abrade the contoured surface. Because the outer surface portion of the profiled, soft roller is able to distort and wrap across the contoured surface, the soft profiled portion need not have the exact contoured shape and dimensions of the contoured surface being abraded. The soft roller body may have portions with different hardness by using different materials or different densities of the same foam material.

  • Patent number: 5662519
Abstract: A contour sander for sanding a curved surface includes a hard backing plate having a support face for supporting a sheet of sandpaper. The backing plate is uniformly flexible along substantially its entire length for conforming generally to the curvature of the surface. A pliable handle extends along the length of the plate and follows flexure of the plate when a sanding pressure is applied against the handle.

  • Patent number: 5593340
Abstract: A single castable ophthalmic lens polishing lap includes a mounting plate that is adapted for connection to a lap press/cylinder machine and includes a flexible membrane that is affixed to the mounting plate and filled with castable material. A polishing pad is affixed to the flexible membrane. The lap is cast by first applying energy to the castable material that causes it to soften, and to preferably change to a fluid phase, and then pressing the lap against the rough cut back surface of a lens. This causes the castable material to deform so that the lap's curvature is complementary to the lens' prescription curvature. Energy is then removed from the lap so that the castable material solidifies in the desired shape. After polishing, the lap can be recast with another lens having a different prescription.

  • Patent number: 5564971
Abstract: The roller and belt assembly for mounting on a spindle or drive shaft comprises a closed loop belt having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface having an engagable material thereon, and the outer surface having an abrasive or buffing material thereon. The assembly further includes a cylindrical roller having an outer cylindrical surface, having a longitudinal axis and having a resilient, compressible material attached to and covering the outer cylindrical surface. Sliding and engaging structure is attached to the resilient, compressible material which, when the belt is rotated in a first direction, allows the belt to slidingly rotate around and about the longitudinal axis of the roller and, when the belt is rotated in a second direction, the sliding and engaging structure engages the engagable material on the inner surface of the belt and prevents the belt from rotating about the roller.

  • Patent number: 5482498
Abstract: The invention relates to a honing tool for carrying out honing working of a work with high accuracy and super precision finishing method using the honing tool. The honing tool is mainly constituted by a pilot section (5), a rough grinding section (7), a finish grinding section (10) and a correction section (13). The honing tool is sent at rapid speed while being reciprocated little, and the machining working and correction finishing of the straightness are carried out thereby the honing working is carried out. According to the invention, the machining working efficiency and the working accuracy can be improved, and the honing finishing with high straightness becomes possible.

  • Patent number: 5427566
Abstract: A flexible honeycomb panel containing wire or other abrasive material for abrading a workpiece, including a honeycomb core embedded with a quantity of abrasive material, and a facing sheet. The honeycomb core is formed of undulating strips of resilient thermoplastic material that are thermal compression bonded together to form cell walls defining a plurality of contiguous regularly shaped cells. The abrasive material is contained within the strips. The facing sheet, formed of resilient thermoplastic material, is thermal compression bonded to a face of the core. The bonding is accomplished by simultaneously applying heat and pressure to the joinder of the facing sheet and the core. The opposite face of the core remains uncovered. In use, the uncovered face of the core is brought into rubbing contact with the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5392569
Abstract: One aspect of the invention provides a sanding tool including a first rigid member having a first planar surface. There is an elongated groove along the surface which receives an edge of a sheet of sandpaper. The sandpaper is supported by a second rigid member with a second surface which extends along the groove outwardly from the first planar surface. Another aspect of the invention provides a sanding tool with a first rigid member having a first planar surface. A plurality of nesting members are received on the first surface. Each nesting member has a sandpaper receiving, partly cylindrical surface extending outwardly from the first surface. At least one outer nesting member is removable to expose the partly cylindrical surface of another radially inward nesting member.

  • Patent number: 5387251
Abstract: An improved endless belt sanding block, typically having four flat rigid support sections connected by a set of hinges (12), (16), (22), and (28) to form a foldable closed loop. Two of the support sections, an upper tapered support (18), and a lower tapered support (26), have thickened ends which hinge together at the inner surface of the foldable loop. A base support (10), typically the longest support section, and a top support (14), typically intermediate in length, complete the closed loop. When tapered supports (18) and (26) are folded inward at the juncture of their thick ends, the sanding block is in a contracted position and an endless sanding belt (32) may be placed around the outer surface of the sanding block. Conversely by folding outward, the thick ends pry outward against the endless sanding belt causing it to tighten. A brace section (24) inside the foldable loop connects to the same hinge used at the tapered supports juncture to form a triple hinge (22).
