  • Patent number: 8997897
Abstract: A layer of matrix powder is deposited within a mold opening. A layer of super-abrasive particles is then deposited over the matrix powder layer. The super-abrasive particles have a non-random distribution, such as being positioned at locations set by a regular and repeating distribution pattern. A layer of matrix powder is then deposited over the super-abrasive particles. The particle and matrix powder layer deposition process steps are repeated to produce a cell having alternating layers of matrix powder and non-randomly distributed super-abrasive particles. The cell is then fused, for example using an infiltration, hot isostatic pressing or sintering process, to produce an impregnated structure. A working surface of the impregnated structure that is oriented non-parallel (and, in particular, perpendicular) to the super-abrasive particle layers is used as an abrading surface for a tool.

  • Patent number: 6840850
Abstract: A grindstone exhibiting good abrasive properties while being inexpensive and including stacked layers. The stacked layers include at least one layer of abrasive grain, which in turn includes juxtapose zones of different abrasive grains, one of these zones being proximate to the center of the at least one layer and another of the zones extending along the outer periphery of the at least one layer. A method for forming the at least one layer makes a blank of a first type of abrasive grains and a ring of a second type of abrasive grains. Respective inner and outer contours of the blank are geometrically similar. The ring and the blank are positioned in an inserting position, and then in a subsequent step for making the grindstone, the stack of layer is pressed. Such a grindstone and method can be useful for making cutting-off and surface-treating wheel, as an example.

  • Patent number: 6821196
Abstract: A molded tooth design of generally pyramidal form made of various hard grit materials for use on a grinding wheel for grinding non-metal materials. The tooth structure generally includes a raked face having a neutral to positive rake angle that terminates to a sharp point. The tooth structure also includes on the raked face edge portions below the point extending from both sides thereof having a predetermined clearance angle to increase penetration and reduce friction of the tooth during the grinding process. The tooth structure may also include at a top end of the rake face a truncated clearance surface which will produce a wider cutting edge that is flat, for use in attacking the work surface of the work piece being ground. The rake face of the tooth generally may also be formed to have positive rake in the truncated surface.

  • Patent number: 6769975
Abstract: A super abrasive tool comprises scattered super abrasive grains fixed on a working surface with a bond layer. The bond layer has a flat surface and protrusions. Each protrusion has one grain and the average height from the flat surface to the top of the grain is in a specific range. A process for producing a super abrasive tool comprises forming in a spacer holes having a cylindrical portion having a diameter smaller than the average diameter of grains at the lower face and a portion having a diameter increasing to a specific value at the upper face; placing one grain in each hole; fixing the grains by forming a bond layer on the upper face of the spacer; and removing the spacer. The super abrasive tool maintains sufficient protrusion of super abrasive grains, causes no releasing of the grains nor loading and has excellent cutting ability.

  • Patent number: 6755729
Abstract: An abrasive article including from about 40 to about 80 volume percent interconnected porosity, the article being useful as a segment for a segmented grinding wheel, and a method for fabricating the same. The method includes blending a mixture of abrasive grain, bond material and dispersoid particles, the mixture including from about 40 to about 80 volume percent dispersoid particles. In one embodiment the mixture includes from about 50 to about 80 volume percent dispersoid particles. In another embodiment the mixture includes an organic bond material and from about 40 to about 80 volume percent dispersoid particles. The powder mixture is then pressed into an abrasive laden composite and thermally processed. After cooling the composite is immersed into a solvent, which dissolves substantially all of the dispersoid particles, leaving a highly porous, bonded abrasive article.
