  • Patent number: 9039497
Abstract: A portable plucking mechanism for birds, comprising a rotating head with a plurality of flexible protrusions operably connected to a motor, a plurality of arm members, and an attachment mechanism optionally comprising a trailer hitch receiver and an electrical connection to a power source. These components are connected with a plurality of articulable joints, allowing for optimal positioning of the rotating head (at the distal end of an arm member) in space relative to the position of the attachment mechanism (at the proximal end of another arm member). Thus, the user has convenient access regardless of terrain or obstacles, the ability to easily reposition the head, and the ability to manipulate the body of the bird with both hands, to frictionally engage a plurality of feathers with the rotating flexible protrusions, while minimizing damage to the meat of the bird.

  • Patent number: 7121941
Abstract: A resilient rubber finger and a locking mechanism therefore for use in poultry processing plants for the plucking of feathers off poultry is provided. The rubber-plucking finger is comprised of an oversized base without an annular recess, and a tapered furrowed shank. A plurality of fingers is inserted into a support base through apertures therein. The diameter of the shank proximate the base is substantially equal to the diameter of the support base aperture to ease insertion and removal. A backing plate is provided to abut the rear of the support plate preventing accidental displacement of the rubber finger from the support plate. The support plate is attached to the backing plate using an integrated centrifugal locking mechanism within the backing plate.

  • Patent number: 6918825
Abstract: Apparatus for de-feathering (i.e. picking or plucking) poultry. More particularly, picking apparatus employing a plurality of elongated picking elements which are resistant to cracking and/or micro-poring, and which are preferably flexible and/or bendable and which are of sufficiently low mass such as to decrease poundage yield loss (e.g. decrease fat loss and poultry wing damage). In some embodiments, apparatus is provided having a plurality of filaments rotatable about an axis for removing feathers from a poultry carcass.

  • Patent number: 6001012
Abstract: The invention entails a defeathering cylinder having a plurality of fingers extending radially from its curved surface. The cylinder is mounted on a shaft positioned along the axis of the cylinder. The cylinder is rotatably mounted to an enclosure having a top, a bottom, a front wall, a back wall opposite the front wall, and sides connecting the front wall to the back wall. The front wall of the enclosure contains a cylinder opening. The back wall contains a plurality of apertures sized to substantially inhibit the passage of feathers. A power source such as an electric motor is functionally connected to the shaft on which the cylinder is mounted. Operation of the motor causes the shaft and the cylinder to revolve within the cylinder opening. The revolution of the fingers extending from the cylinder causes air to flow into the cylinder opening and out the apertures. When a bird is placed in contact with the revolving fingers, the feathers will be removed and drawn into the enclosure and toward the back wall.

  • Patent number: 5944595
Abstract: A feather picking device which includes an electric motor with two output shafts wherein each of the output shafts is used to mount a feather picking spool. The spools include a series of rubber bands connected in rows and are provided with rubber bands of a certain size to match the needs of a particular bird. Smaller bands are provided for picking feathers from doves, quails, and other small birds while larger rubber bands are provided for picking feathers from geese and other larger birds. The motor is housed within a housing position over a narrow gage feather collection cage which is enclosed within an airflow housing. Air is drawn through the airflow housing and the feather collection cage by a fan mounted to the back thereof. The airflow housing and fan are supported on wheels so that the feather picking device can be easily moved.
