Patent number: 8721407Abstract: A vehicle includes an air intake that facilitates air transfer from an ambient environment outside the vehicle to a vehicle space. The air intake inhibits liquid transfer from the ambient environment to the vehicle space. The air intake includes an inlet for receiving air from the ambient environment, and an outlet in communication with the inlet. The outlet is disposed in an upper portion of the housing. A blocking member is disposed within the housing adjacent the inlet for preventing upward fluid flow from the inlet directly to the outlet. The air intake receives ambient air through an aperture in a window in the vehicle, thereby reducing the size of the air intake.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2005Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Mike Mandernach, Ranganathan Madhavan, Rachid El Aile, Maria Heirtzler, Arthur Henke, Lim Wijaya

Patent number: 8512109Abstract: The effect of a windshield for a saddle-type vehicle such as a low-slung type of motorcycle or three-wheeled vehicle is enhanced, and pressure is sufficiently adjusted in an open space at the back of the windshield using an inventive windshield system. The vehicle includes a leg shield in front of legs of a rider, and a step space rearward of the leg shield. The windshield system includes a windshield which is provided with an air outlet that opens upward. An air inlet provided at the front of the vehicle communicates with the air outlet other through a duct, and the air outlet opens to the upper center of the windshield. Pressure adjusting outlets, for adjusting pressure in a space around the rider by blowing air toward the step space, are provided separately from the air outlet.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2006Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yukiya Ueda, Haruomi Sugita, Yukinori Kurakawa, Hiroyuki Ozawa, Takefumi Okubo

Patent number: 6991531Abstract: An air intake for a vehicle that facilitates air transfer from an ambient environment outside the vehicle to a vehicle space is provided. The air intake inhibits liquid transfer from the ambient environment to the vehicle space. The air intake includes a housing having an inlet for receiving air from the ambient environment, and an outlet in communication with the inlet. The outlet is disposed in an upper portion of the housing. A blocking member is disposed within the housing adjacent the inlet for preventing upward fluid flow from the inlet directly to the outlet, thereby inhibiting liquid flow through the outlet and into the vehicle space. A portion of the air intake housing is configured for attachment to a vehicle window, and the inlet is configured to be disposed along one edge of the window.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2004Date of Patent: January 31, 2006Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Lim Wijaya, Maria Heirtzler, Ranganatha Madhavan, Arthur Henke, Rachid El Aile, Michael Mandernach, Carolyn Tatge, Douglas Zhu

Patent number: 6899376Abstract: A motor vehicle provides redirection of the slipstream to keep side windows of the vehicle clear of grime thrown into the path of the vehicle as spray or carried by precipitation. Redirection of the slipstream is provided by a turbulence or eddy generating protrusions extending into the slipstream from the vehicle's A-pillars. The protrusions or contours may be formed integrally with the encapsulation molding attached around the circumference of the vehicle's windshield.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2004Date of Patent: May 31, 2005Assignee: International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventor: Matthew M.
