The smooth flow of fresh air into the intake opening reduces the power requirements of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system for which the vehicle which draws the air into the intake opening. The reduction of the separated flow region also results in a reduction in vehicle noise during the operation of the vehicle.

In an additional embodiment of the invention, there is an additional combustion air filter disposed in the cabin of the vehicle for filtering cabin air prior to using the cabin air as combustion air. With this arrangement the combustion air filter is easy to change. In both embodiments available space the engine compartment of the vehicle can be increased because the air filter has been removed from the engine compartment.

    Abstract: A low signature, low restriction, ballistically protective air intake assly for an exteriorly armored structure. The assembly is provided is comprised of one or more ducts having an entry end, an exit end and a spiralled duct portion between the ends. The entry ends communicate with an intake bell of armor material. The intake bell curves both away from the duct and out from duct openings at the entry ends. At the exit ends of the ducts are armor members faced toward the duct openings at the entry end. The armor members are positioned such that the spiralled duct portions lie between the armor members and the intake bell. Projectiles such as bullets travelling toward the entry end duct openings are either deflected away by the bell or caught by the armor member, whereby ballistic protection exists for elements in the armored structure interior to the assembly.

    Abstract: An air intake system for a cab and engine of a vehicle is shown and described. In a preferred embodiment, dry, ambient air is provided to the cab and engine through a duct that is mounted to an inner surface of a vehicle hood such that the hood forms a top surface of the duct. The duct is relatively narrow across the width of the hood and flares into an air chamber on either side of the hood. An air inlet opening is provided on both sides of the hood such that outside air is drawn into the air chambers. The velocity of the air drops as it passes into and through the air chambers, causing the moisture in the air to separate and drain from the air chambers through an evacuator valve provided in the bottom surface of each chamber. Two openings are provided in the bottom surface of the duct. One opening sealingly engages an opening in the engine air cleaner and the second opening sealingly engages a cab air intake duct, when the hood is in a closed position.

    Abstract: A motor vehicle heating/air-conditioning system of a motor vehicle has a water-removal device arranged in the fresh-air inlet duct, rising from the duct base and comprising a coarse-mesh lattice and a fine-mesh lattice resting against the latter. The water removed is carried away downwardly on the webs of the coarse-mesh lattice to the duct base which forms a water collection point with water drainage. In order to combine a favorable water-removal function with a good air-guidance function, the coarse-mesh lattice facing the incident air represents an air guide with predetermined throughflow and is pleated in a corrugated shape. A channel spanned by the fine-mesh lattice arranged in at least some areas is in each case formed between two upwardly-directed corrugation troughs. The water-removal device is placed in the region of a duct widening provided by a set-back wall portion, such that the water-removal device ends at a distance from the set-back wall portion.

The cooperating sealing flanges of the two duct portions, lying in an approximately horizontal plane, are covered over by the bonnet. The first duct portion is a water-collecting box surrounding the air inlet opening and having a drainage device.
