Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing noise levels occurring at a particular frequency in an air distribution apparatus used with an automotive vehicle having an interior compartment. The apparatus includes a noise reduction structure located in the air duct between an inlet end connected to a housing and a discharge end located in the vehicle interior compartment. The noise reduction structure is located a position spaced between the housing and the interior compartment of the automotive vehicle. The particular position of the noise reduction structure is determined based on the frequency of the noise level sought to be reduced. The method includes measuring the frequency of the noise level emitted from the discharge end of the air duct and correspondingly positioning the noise reduction structure at a spacing or distance based on the measured frequency.

Abstract: A construction of a filter 170 that allows air stream from a blower fan 120 to pass through a heat exchanger 130 arranged adjacent to the blower fan 120 after its flowing direction is changed by about 90 degrees. The filter 170 is disposed on the front surface of the heat exchanger on the upstream side of the air flow and has a construction such that airflow resistance of the filter gradually changes with respect to the flow velocity of air passing through the filter and in this way, flow velocity distribution of air passing through the heat exchanger becomes uniform. In this case, a fold pitch P of folds of the filter that is folded or a peak height h of the folds is changed in a plurality of steps or without any steps.

  • Patent number: 6322440
Abstract: An outside air intake structure of an automobile includes (a) a cowl panel having a cowl panel opening; (b) a dash panel having a dash panel opening; and (c) a duct disposed on the dash panel opening. Thus, the outside air is allowed to pass through the cowl panel opening, then the duct, and then the dash panel opening. The duct has a duct opening for taking the outside air into the duct. This duct extends in a forward direction of the automobile such that the duct opening is disposed in a more forward position than the cowl panel opening in a fore-and-aft direction of the automobile. The outside air intake structure further has a bulkhead extending in a substantially vertical direction in an area defined between the duct opening and the cowl panel opening in a transverse direction of the automobile. The cowl panel has a raised portion. The duct has a top wall extending upwardly from a peripheral portion of the dash panel opening.

  • Patent number: 6182741
Abstract: An air conditioner includes a case accommodating an evaporator having a core portion and a lower tan disposed at a bottom of the core portion. The case has a recess portion disposed at an upstream air side of the evaporator, and a covering wall is formed to extend upwardly from the bottom of the recess portion to cover only the lower tank at an immediately upstream air side. When air passes through the evaporator, alien substances contained in air collide with the evaporator and fall to be deposited in the recess portion. Therefore, the deposition of the alien substances do not directly adhere to the lower tank of the evaporator to prevent the evaporator from being corroded.

  • Patent number: 5632673
Abstract: A ventilation system for a lightweight automobile having a plastic body includes a heating air inlet in fluid communication with fresh air at the engine hood upper cowl of the automobile. The air inlet is rigid plastic and is bonded to the hood to stiffen the hood. The fresh air is directed through the inlet to a heat exchanger shroud within the engine compartment, and the engine exhaust pipe passes through the shroud to heat the air in the shroud. From the shroud, the heated fresh air passes through a bulkhead valve into the passenger compartment, where it can be directed toward the passengers' feet or against the windshield to defrost the windshield. In addition, a rigid plastic fresh air plenum is transversely mounted in the passenger compartment as an instrument panel, and the fresh air plenum stiffens the body. Fresh air from the cowl is directed into the plenum and out of selectively coverable openings in the plenum to cool the passenger compartment.

  • Patent number: 5356337
Abstract: An electric vehicle has a traction motor and apparatus comprising an air circuit for cooling the traction motor, for providing heat, where required, for the cabin of the vehicle, and for ventilating the cabin. The air circuit of the apparatus comprises a main branch containing a main ventilating and heating blower, together with a secondary branch which is branched from the first branch and which contains the cooling radiator for the traction motor. An auxiliary blower is arranged in the secondary branch. An upstream mixing valve and a downstream mixing valve connect these two branches in parallel, in such a way that either: the flow of cabin heating air passes through the radiator; or the mixing valves isolate the secondary branch, so as to form an entirely separate cooling air circuit in which the air flow is produced by the auxiliary blower.
