  • Patent number: 9702575
Abstract: A portable appliance with a housing defining a space for operating components. The operating components define an air moving mechanism for causing atmospheric air to be drawn into the housing space to at least one of: a) cool at least one of the operating components; b) be treated by at least one of the operating components; and c) cause movement of a fluid within the housing space. The housing has a first wall with a downwardly facing surface in which an inlet opening is defined through which atmospheric air is drawn into the housing space. The housing further has a spacing wall that underlies the inlet opening and bounds in conjunction with the first wall an intake space through which atmospheric air is guided in a generally horizontal path towards the inlet opening.

  • Patent number: 7927197
Abstract: A diffuser is provided for controlling flow of air in an air conditioning system. The diffuser has an air flow control baffle (B) that is controlled by pivoting arms (12). Two collars (62,62) actuate the arms (12) in cam fashion by acting on either of two cam surfaces (92,94) of each arm (12) to open or close the baffle (B). The collars (62,64) can move independently of each other towards and away from the respective cam surfaces (92,94), i.e. in an actuating direction. The diffuser includes a set point adjustment mechanism (132) for moving both the collars (62,64) in unison in the actuating direction, i.e. to adjust the heating and cooling set points simultaneously and includes an offset adjustment mechanism (150) for moving one of the collars (62,64) in the actuating direction relative to the other collar, i.e. to change the offset between the heating and cooling set points.

  • Patent number: 7189159
Abstract: A diffuser cartridge (10) of restricted height is provided for controlling flow of air in an air conditioning system. The cartridge (10) has two axially aligned temperature sensitive elements (34,68) for respectively sensing room temperature and duct temperature variations. Arms (12) are provided for displacing an air flow baffle (B) and a control structure is provided for displacing the arms (12) in response to sensed room and duct temperatures. The control structure pivots the arms (12) cam-fashion as it is moved vertically by the temperature sensitive elements (34, 68). The control structure has two springs (54,56) that act in series to counter movement of the control structure by the temperature sensitive elements (34,68). The springs (54,56) are nested coaxially within each other, with an intermediate component (48) transferring compressive loads from one spring to the other.

  • Patent number: 6168517
Abstract: An air circulation and mixing device is disclosed which can cover a ceiling air ventilation duct, taking air discharged from the duct and drawing air at the room's ceiling, mixing the two, and redirecting the mixed air so that it is discharged radially and parallel to the ceiling, rather than directly downwardly. The device has an open frame whose sides may be covered with removable air filtration media and which forms a primary interior having a lower aperture and normally an upper aperture. An open-sided grille below the lower aperture forms a secondary space. A fan is mounted within the primary space and turns blades within the lower aperture and a disk at the bottom of the secondary space. An annular plate surrounding the fan housing blocks downward flow of incoming air and forces the air to flow radially outwardly around the edge of the plate, thus also insuring good mixing with the incoming ceiling air.

  • Patent number: 5924922
Abstract: A ceiling ventilation inlet includes a housing having an air inlet aperture, an air outlet aperture, and a baffle supported for linear movement adjacent the air outlet aperture. A spring is positioned such that the baffle moves dependant upon air pressure difference between the confinement space and the external environment. Air entering the housing opens the baffle and enters the livestock confinement building in a 360 degree dispersion pattern. The spring causes the baffle to direct the flow of air into the confinement space at a near constant rate so as to optimize ventilation. The greater the air pressure difference between the confinement space and the external environment the greater the air outlet area becomes. Since the inlet is responsive to the pressure difference and the air outlet area increases or decreases in size, the airflow velocity entering the confinement space may be optimized at a near constant rate.

  • Patent number: 5807171
Abstract: An air diffuser apparatus has a box-like air diffuser chamber with sheet metal side walls, that are provided with a series of laterally spaced outlet orifices. Each orifice is formed by cutting out wing portions of the sheet metal on each side of a center line of the orifice and bending the wing portions outwardly to a position inclining toward this center line. The wing portions define an air flow passage tapering in an outward direction. The chamber has a base connected to a lower edge of the side walls that includes a layer of heat insulation material. An upper structure closes the upper end of the chamber and has an inlet opening for introducing pressurized low temperature air into the chamber. This arrangement is highly efficient for diffusion of low temperature air and can be of essentially all-metal construction.

  • Patent number: 5667437
Abstract: An air diffuser for diffusing conditioned air into a room has a diffuser body mounted in a housing to define an air channel which narrows towards the outlet end of the housing to produce a venturi-like effect causing the air to speed up as it leaves the diffuser so that the conditioned air can penetrate stratified layers of air in the room. The diffuser body is of tapered form having a narrow upper end portion and a wider lower end portion disposed in the open, outlet end of the housing. The diffuser body has a surface which faces the internal surface of a sloping side wall of the housing and which is inclined at an angle to the vertical greater than that of the sloping side wall of the housing to provide the narrowing air channel. The diffuser body is adjustably mounted for movement relative to the housing so that the flow of conditioned air leaving the outlet end of the housing can be adjusted.
